Third Text Special Issue 2011
This special issue seeks to spark debate on the notion of change, and aims to push for tangible forms of transformation. Oftentimes, transformation in a South African context is discussed merely in terms of its racial history. We have identified inter-related themes that explore the dynamism of the term “transformation” and which act as a catalyst to critical dialogue. The intention is to understand the complexity of transformation in broad terms, exploring shifts in the ways in which racial, national, gendered or sexual identities are conceptualised. We also seek to re-assess changing processes of production, art criticism and consumption. Below are examples of some thematic ideas we are targeting:
* Art and Institutions
- Museums, galleries, university-based art schools
- Alternative spaces: art centres, artist collectives and collaborative spaces
- Practices of historicisation and heritagisation
* Movement and the Renegotiation of Identities
- Reconceptualising identities
- Xenophobia (Afrophobia and Sinophobia, for example)
- The recontextualisation of South Africa within Africa and the Global South; relations to Euro-American practices
- Conceptualising diaspora in relation to transformation
- Revisiting (South) African Modern Art in relation to movement, confrontation and enculturation
- Transforming spaces: public art commissions and urban cosmetics
* Art and Process
- Art branding
- Art fairs, auctions and collectors
- Virtual spaces of production, transaction and consumption
- Art criticism and writing
Third Text is an accredited, international scholarly journal published by Routledge, and thespecial issue is expected to be published in 2012.The Third Text “Instructions to Authors” can be viewed at http://www.thirdtext.com/authors-guidelines/
Please note that we recommend about 4-5000 words per article. Please send a short “intention to submit” (including an abstract of about 200 to 500 words) by 8th of July.
