Miriam Tlali Reading and Book Club’s 2nd Anniversary (South Africa)

Date: 25 June 2011

The Miriam Tlali Reading & Book Club and the wRite associates mark the Club’s 2nd anniversary by celebrating the National Youth Month in memory of the SALA-winner and foremost activist poet of that Black Consciousness era of the 1970’s and 1980’s, IngoapeleMandingoane. Featuring fellow poet firebrands and peers, creator and producer of Muvhango television series Duma ka Ndlovu, playwright, academic and activist Maishe Maponya, National Poet Laureate Prof. Keorapetse Kgositsile and poets Marcia Tladi and Natalia Molebatsi, this month’s session takes place on Saturday, 25th June 2011, 14H00, African Literature Bookshop, 191 Louis Botha Avenue, Corner 8th Street, Orange Grove.

Madingoane’s popular poem, Africa My Beginning, was published in 1979 and banned immediately afterwards by the then apartheid régime was like an anthem and a conscientising tool for the highly politicized and militant youth of the era. Madingoane is also a recipient of the 2007 Posthumous Literary Award category of the South African Literary Awards.

Celebrating this icon and militant poetic exponent, activities of the Club will include poetry reading as well as performances from the young and old.

The programme looks at encouraging children to read and write through storytelling and reading particularly in indigenous languages. Also interesting will be the Teens’ Session which covers age 11 – 16 facilitated by poet and author Marcia Tladi. This month’s session will focus on poetry-writing as well as reciting. The programme aims to grasp the ever-changing minds of teens at an early stage. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to benefit from these exciting programmes.

The Club was started two years ago with the aim of cultivating reading and writing culture in our country, is also a legacy programme of the South African Literary Awards named after literary veteran Mme Miriam Tlali. This came after Ms Tlali was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Literary Award in 2005.

Book lovers are also invited to buy books that will be on display. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.
