Call for Submissions: Gender and Sexuality in Africa

Deadline: 15 July 2011

African sexualities and gender as seen by Africans is the theme for the next AfricaBe.com.

We exist in an interesting space where we are constantly negotiating and redefining our identities in terms of gender and sexuality and how that relates to our culture and upbringing, spirituality, religion, western and traditional influences, in our relationships, in business and every other context of our lives.

Issues of gender and sexuality are constantly present in our day to day realities – on the one hand there are news articles on corrective rape, laws forbidding homosexuality, sexual harassment in the workplace and on the other hand more openly and proud homosexual men and women, increased conversations around women’s sexuality, gender definitions and roles and how we navigate this sexual and gender landscape and negotiate our own existence and understanding within it.

How do Africans understand this context and engage with it?

We would like your submissions to address one or more of the following questions:

* How have gender relations changed since previous generations to ours?
* How do we understand the varying views of homosexuality in Africa?
* Have African women’s sexuality been misrepresented and what is the reality in your experience?
* Have men and masculinity been ignored and what is the consequence of that?
* How do we understand sexual violence and the underlying reasons for it?
* Is the media overly sexualised and how has this affected us, from how we raise our children to how people interact with each other?
* Books, movies, plays, art, music that address sexuality and gender issues within the African context
* Sexuality and gender dynamics in schools, colleges and in the workplace
