As many of you might already know, Ramadan just started. For those who are not acquainted with it: Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, which requires Muslims to fast during a month from the sunup to the eventide. It is linked to the moon calendar, which is why the starting date is ten days earlier every year.
Last year EMAJ Magazine called for articles about Ramadan. You can find examples of articles that were published below:
- “Now I know how it feels to be a minority”
- “The holy month as seen by the secular”
- “How “trendy” has become Ramadan”
- “How “freaky” is fasting Ramadan”
This year, EMAJ Magazine decided to launch a “Ramadan coverage contest” of original contributions on the topic. The articles will be published on our website and the best three articles will receive a small prize. The best article will be rewarded with a prize of 100 euro and the best two seconds with a prize of 50 euro.
The EMAJ mission is to build bridges. In multi-religious societies, people of different faith have always invited each other to take part in their festivities and customs. We would like to help continue this tradition by displaying your experiences and thoughts about Ramadan to our readers across EU-MENA as a way to create greater understanding.
The contributions should be written in English (no native speaker level is required since all articles will be proofread by our own proofreaders) and can be accompanied with pictures (even though not mandatory). All contributions will be published as soon as we receive them after being proofread.

The criteria for the best articles are the following:
- Originality of the subject
- Ability to capture the interest of the reader and originality with which the journalist treated the issue
Please note that we are not interested in articles explaining Ramadan or Islam in a “wikipedia style”, nor “theological” articles. But we are interested in unique stories, feelings and ideas from both sides of the Mediterranean.
The jury is composed of the four editors-in-chief of EMAJ Magazine. The prizes will be announced at the end of the first week of September 2011.”
