Population Council South Africa, in association with HIV/AIDS and Media Project, collaboration between the Anova Health Institute and University of the Witwatersrand Journalism programme, is hosting a Post-R@pe Care Workshop for Journalists on 30 August 2011 in Johannesburg.
Objectives of the workshop are:
- To bring journalists to exposure and knowledge of why the s3xual assavlt and stigma associated with it is important to cover;
- To raise awareness on how s3xual assavlt is currently covered in South Africa;
- To increase knowledge among journalists on post-r@pe care services that are available to survivors of s3xual assavlt;
- To increase ethical and informative messaging around s3xual assavlt issues for accurate reporting.
The workshop aims to empower journalists with HIV prevention information, post exposure prophylaxis in particular, for those affected by s3xual assault. The outcome of the workshop is expected to result in s3xual assavlt stories being covered more accurately and focusing the messaging on behaviour change thus reducing the stigma associated with it. Journalists are also expected to report and write stories that empower media consumers with knowledge on what to do after experiencing s3xual assavlts.
Target Audience
- Radio presenters/journalists;
- Television presenters/journalists;
- Print media journalists;
- S3xual assavlt experts (to share technical information around s3xual assavlt);
- Public Health Facility officials (to share the procedures on PEP); and
- S3xual assavlt NGOs (to share their intervention from the community level and psycho support they provide).
PCSA and HIV/AIDS and Media project are hosting a one-day journalist training/workshop event. This training will focus on the following proposed implementation plan:
- Introduction to the training;
- Why is s3xual assavlt topic so important;
- Understanding post-r@pe care;
- Discussing rights and responsibilities under s3xual assavlt subject;
- How media is currently covering s3xual assavlt is South Africa;
- Understanding the elements of messaging around s3xual assavlt and survivors;
- Increase exposure to s3xual assavlt survivors and public health facility officials for more accurate reporting;
- Learning and sharing information on s3xual assavlt.
