Writing professionally and coherently about your artwork or art practice can be beneficial to securing viewer and media interest. Visual artists often need text to support their art practice with written material for art competitions, submitting a portfolio to a gallery, for exhibition text and so forth. This workshop will explore the function and importance of artist statements, the packaging and positioning of art products and writing appropriately for the media.
Outcome: Each participant should leave with a polished statement about a particular artwork, series of artworks or their general art practice.

What to bring:
Participants must bring an artist statement that is NO shorter than 500 words. It must either be about your practice in general or about a series of works you wish to promote. You must bring images or examples of the work, either on a laptop, USB stick or disc (so that it can be viewed) Please also bring any other material that it is pertinent to the work; such as texts that have informed your latest work or particular aesthetic.

Mary Corrigall is an art critic, editor, journalist and art historian based in Johannesburg. She is the Books Editor and Senior Feature writer at The Sunday Independent newspaper. She is also a Research Associate at The Research Centre for Visual Identities in Art and Design at the University of Johannesburg. She has lectured at Wits University. Her articles have been widely published in newspapers across the country as well as local and international art publications and peer-reviewed journals. She has been nominated for a number of awards and won a CNN African Journalism award in 2007. The English Academy of South Africa has awarded her the Thomas Pringle Award for Reviews twice; in 2009 and 2011. The European Commission awarded Corrigall a Lorenzo Natali Award for Journalism in 2009. She is the founder and head of the South African Arts Writers and Critics Association (SAAWCA).
