Job involves taking responsibility for all aspects of content development and issue design. The editor will develop story ideas, assign and write articles when necessary, manage freelancers and interns, partner with the art team to conceive of and plan visuals, and produce the magazine.
This is a demanding position that requires a lot of energy, well-developed writing, editing and project management skills, experience and long working hours. Only candidates with a minimum of 5 years full-time experience (including at least two years as editors) at a professional magazine or newspaper will be considered for this position. Experience at a business magazine preferred.
Young, mid-career, energetic journalists with relevant experience who are willing to build an international career in journalism are very much encouraged to apply.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead a team of writers/editorial staff (3 to 4 staff members) in the production of an independent-minded, news-driven monthly magazine on business and the economy in Egypt. (80 to 100 pages, editorial content is 60 to 70%)
- Periodical innovation and creativity (design and content); delegate tasks and responsibilities accordingly
- Ensure that the AmCham perspective on vital issues is portrayed in the magazine
- Commission freelance writers and photographers
- Be aware of the magazine’s readership (AmCham members and others)
- Conduct technical interviews and recommend new hires
- Build a team spirit among staff writers, ensure adequate staffing necessary to produce the magazine on time and availability of backup for staff members
- Conduct annual technical evaluation for editorial staff and make appraisal recommendations
- Keep sufficient backup articles in reserve
- Protect editorial integrity and independent spirit of Business Monthly
- Plan each issue and monitor deadlines to ensure that the magazine is ready to go to the print shop no later than the 28th of every month
- Prepare a plan for each issue of Business Monthly articles with department manager
