No Submission Fee for Writers Afrika's Followers: FA Foundation's Immigration Journalism Award (open to journalists of any nationality)

Deadline: 31 May 2012

The Program Associate of the French American Foundation, Mr. Nassim Alloy, is pleased to inform you that the the submission fee for the foundation's Immigration Journalism Award will be waived for followers of Writers Afrika. Please e-mail him directly at journalism@frenchamerican.org before proceeding with your application. Mention that you found the announcement on Writers Afrika.

Note that the award is open to journalists of any nationality but work (about immigration or integration issues) submitted must have been published in the United States or in Europe. Good luck!

OVERVIEW

According to the 2010 State of the News Media report of the Pew Research Center, immigration receives minimal attention from American news media, despite the importance of this issue in society and its complexity as a public-policy issue. Based on frequency, immigration is ranked 24th out of 26 topics covered in the news. However, according to the 2011 Transatlantic Trends: Immigration survey of the German Marshall Fund, 15% of Americans listed immigration as their highest or second-highest concern.

With the Immigration Journalism Award, the French-American Foundation will recognize and bring increased national and international attention – both from the media and the public – to excellent pieces of journalism on the topic of immigration and integration and to high-quality immigration reporting in general.

This year, the French-American Foundation will select up to two winners for work published in the United States or in Europe, in English or French. Award recipients may win up to $10,000 and will be invited to attend and speak at the Immigration Journalism Award Ceremony in New York (Fall 2012), where their work will be celebrated in the presence of renowned media professionals.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The award is open to experienced journalists of any nationality and with an interest in questions of immigration and integration. The work submitted for consideration must be in English or French and must have been published in 2011, either in the United States or in Europe.

The French-American Foundation will pay special attention to innovative and groundbreaking material concentrating on the social justice component of the immigration debate and with the potential to diversify media coverage of immigration to reflect a wider array of voices and perspectives.

We are looking for visionary, under-covered and high-impact stories with the potential to advance the public debate. Both creative content and formats will draw our particular attention. All types of stories will be considered (local, global, cultural, economic, etc.) as long as they comply with journalism ethics of fairness and responsibility.
