United Nations CCD Workshop for African Environmental Journalists (Algeria/ Africa-wide)

This call is open to African journalists specializing in the environment. Up to 14 journalists will receive financial support to participate in a 3-day workshop in Algeria.

OBJECTIVES:

- Increasing media coverage, challenges related to land degradation and best management practices for sustainable land.
- Develop / create a community of journalists who write regularly on the fight against desertification and land degradation and ways to mitigate the effects of drought.

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA:

The competition is open to all African journalists specializing in the environment and who already have articles on land degradation and desertification.

AN APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT:

- Two articles (print and online press, radio or television) on land degradation (articles written in a language other than French must be accompanied by a short summary in French)
- A letter from the editor agreeing to publish the articles
- A letter of a page, which:

• explains the interest of the journalist to attend the workshop
• presents previous reports on this subject
• indicates the number of items he / she will publish as a result of the workshop and the tentative schedule of publications: before or during the Rio Conference 20.

SPONSORSHIP:

The cost of travel and accommodation to attend the workshop will be supported by the Algerian government. The secretariat of the UNCCD will provide letters of invitation on request for visas and travel.

DATE AND PLACE:

The workshop will be held from May 29 to 31 in Algeria. The working language of the workshop is French.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES:

The complete applications can be sent to press@unccd.int until May 3, 2012. Indicate in the subject line: Application for the Media Workshop in Africa. Shortlisted candidates will be notified in writing one week after the deadline. Winners will be notified by May 15, 2012.
