(Note: this competition is open to all South Africans and not just students/ alumni of University of KwaZulu-Natal.)
Novice and experienced writers are invited to submit short stories, essays, reflections, poetry or pieces with a visual component (e.g. cartoon strips, illustrations or photo essays) to the University of KwaZulu-Natal/Independent Newspapers isiZulu-English Writing Competition.
This innovative competition calls for writing in isiZulu or in a combination of isiZulu and English in a style which will capture the imagination of young and old South Africans. Winning pieces will be published in a book by UKZN Press to be launched at the 2013 Time of the Writer Festival. Selected pieces will also be published in titles in the Independent Newspapers Group.
The overall winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of R10 000. The second and third placed entrants each win R3 000. All authors of winning pieces will receive two free copies of the
UKZN Press book. The expert panel of judges includes renowned storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe.
All entries must include the entrant’s name, address and contact telephone numbers. UKZN Press will contribute any royalties accrued from the book towards a scholarship for a UKZN undergraduate student majoring in isiZulu studies.
RULES
- The competition is open to all writers. Entrants younger than 18 must have the permission of their parents or legal guardians.
- All entries must be original works and must not have been previously published nor submitted elsewhere for publication. Entries must be no longer than 3 000 words and must be in isiZulu or a combination of isiZulu and English. If an entry is bilingual, English must
- comprise less than half of the submission.
- Electronic and hard copy entries should be in MS Word, in Arial 12pt, 1.5 spacing. Handwritten entries should be clear, easy to read and well spaced. Copyright of the work entered in the competition remains that of the author, but by entering a work the entrant gives
- permission for it, if selected,to be published in any Independent Newspapers title, on the competition website and/or in an edited and
- bound collection produced by UKZN Press.
- The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The competition closes on July 31 2012. Entries received after the deadline will not be considered. There is no entry fee.
