Deadline: 1 August 2012
Ushirikiano Panda (UP) is a Nairobi-based group whose mission is to create safe spaces and increase the well-being of intersex and transgender (IT) people in Kenya. The group is led by IT people themselves, and strives to develop a country in which all citizens are free to determine and express their own gender.
UP is developing a resource guide for Kenyan IT people on mental and physical health, to be published in early 2013. We want to include personal stories, poems, photographs and art from intersex and transgender East Africans in this guide, to be printed alongside information on health care, accessibility and policies.
Share your stories with us: the joys, the hardships and the quirks, navigating daily life and going through periods of change. Anything that you think needs to be said about being intersex or trans in East Africa.
Possible topics include:
- Relationships with friends, family and community.
- Self-love and self-care.
- S3x, sexuality and dating.
- Gender transition.
- Pregnancy and parenting.
- Relating with the LGBTI community.
- Being intersex and transgender in rural areas.
- Religion, spirituality and gender diversity.
- Self-portraits and reflections on self.
- Experiences with the healthcare system.
- Experiences with police and the justice system.
Deadline for submissions is August 1st, 2012. Written materials can be in English, Swahil or Shengi. If you’d rather share your story with the UP team in person, we may be able to conduct an in-person interview or can talk with you by phone.
