Deadline May 31 | 2012 Anthony Sampson Foundation Award for In-Depth Journalism Project (South Africa)

Deadline: 31 May 2012

Anthony Sampson was editor of Drum magazine in the 1950s, when it captured the spirit of the times with its bold coverage of jazz, gangsters, shebeens and the celebration of black heroes.

He worked with many of the finest writers and photographers the South Africa has seen and pioneered a powerful, first-person narrative style of reporting and investigation, with the ‘Mr Drum’ character going to prison or working on farms to expose appalling conditions.

The Anthony Sampson Foundation has been established to promote this tradition of reporting and to encourage new, young voices among journalists and would-be journalists.

2012 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The ASF is offering an award of up to R80 000 for a reporting project that will continue in the spirit of those early Drum days, a piece of journalism that is original, topical and imaginative, that sets out to expose and explain.

THE AWARD

The ASF award is for a written project, a piece of in-depth journalism of particular relevance to South Africa. It should be original and topical. The award is intended to allow a journalist to take time away from the newsroom, as a bridge between university and work, to ease the financial strain of a freelancer trying to get established.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The award is open to any journalist or would-be journalist based in South Africa.

HOW TO APPLY

Describe your proposal in not more than 500 words and send it with a CV and an example of your writing by email to anthonysampsonfoundation@gmail.com by 31 May 2012.
