Job Opening: Copy/ Entertainment Editor for Seventeen Magazine (South Africa)

Are you a young at heart, super organised, focused team player with a passion for words, entertainment and pop culture? seventeen magazine wants you! South Africa's leading youth publication is in search of a keen copy/ entertainment editor. The successful candidate will be based in Cape Town and be responsible for sub editing the magazine (and its brand extensions) as well as managing an editorial section.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• sub-edit, fact check and rewrite all raw copy (main magazine, advertorials and supplements) before handing over to deputy editor;
• ensure that all copy adheres not only to grammar and spelling conventions, but also to seventeen style;
• write headlines, blurbs, contents page, mail page and stockists list as well as doing the first read of syndicated copy;
• sub-edit and proof every page until copy is clean and ready for 'dummy';
• manage flow of job bags and proofs by liaising with department heads and communicate any delays;
• make up 'dummy' magazine and do the first read of the dummy. Ensure dummy is completed within deadline;
• manage changes from different departments and liaise with the art director;
• manage mock up board;
• assist art director in getting layouts ready for repro;
• liaise with editor and deputy editor should any problems arise;
• research and write regular stories for the magazine and supplements to deadline;
• write copy for entertainment section, ensuring it fits with seveenteen style and tone;
• interpret and report on entertainment industry trends, tailoring them to the seventeen readership;
• keep abreast of youth trends in the entertainment field and source images and copy for editorial section.

REQUIREMENTS

• have a relevant tertiary qualification;
• have excellent writing and sub-editing abilities;
• have excellent organisational skills (an ability to coordinate various activities);
• have good communication skills and be fluent in both written and spoken English;
• have an extensive network of contacts within the entertainment field;
• have computer literacy skills, especially in Adobe InDesign, Word and PowerPoint;
• at least two years' experience in an editorial or media environment;
• have a passionate interest in both the media and entertainment industries;
• be familiar with seventeen style and brand identity.
