Job Opening: Senior Editor - Dictionaries for Oxford University Press (South Africa)

This position involves developing, project managing, compiling, editing and proofchecking dictionary products, mainly for the school market. It includes taking responsibility for the quality and appropriateness of the material, liaising with authors, designers, typesetters and freelancers, and working within deadlines and within budgets, according to editorial and production processes. Dictionary products may include digital and print, as well as monolingual, bilingual, subject and multilingual dictionaries.

You will: * demonstrate strong initiative, enthusiasm and problem-solving ability * cope with deadlines and work well under pressure * possess outstanding conceptual, organisational and language skills * be highly organised, efficient and meticulous * communicate competently and professionally with people at all leveles * be willing to assume responsibility and work independently.

Requirements: * highly computer literate * mother-tongue-equivalent English language skills * a minimum of 3 years' experience in book editing and project management * an appropriate tertiary level qualification * a good understanding of editorial and production processes.

Highly recommended: * professional experience developing or producing dictionaries * familiarity with TshwaneLex or other professional dictionary development software * interest in how South Africans use dictionaries

Recommended: * linguistic or lexicographic training * up-to-date with digital trends in publishing * experience developing corpora or using corpus-querying software * school teaching training or experience * familiarity with the school curriculum and education system in South Africa * driver's licence and willingness to undertake occasional travel * skills in a language other than English or Afrikaans

Salary will be commensurate with experience. We offer participation in pension and medical aid schemes, and 20 working days’ leave a year.
