The South African Press Association (Sapa) is seeking a Senior Reporter/Sub-editor to fill a vacancy in the Parliament office in Cape Town with effect from June or July, 2012.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have a minimum of five years in a news-gathering operation;
- Have a good to excellent all-round command of English, as the language used by Sapa;
- Have a working knowledge of at least one other official language. Other language abilities and skills will be a distinct advantage;
- Have a good grasp of current affairs and an excellent general knowledge;
- Have knowledge and understanding of and general sensitivity to relevant aspects of SA's cultural diversity and their relevance to working in a journalistic environment;
- Have a good understanding of media and related ethics, legislation, and statutory regulations, including the SA Press Council's Code of Conduct;
- Be computer literate and operationally competent in respect of internet and related media platforms as a research medium.
- Have an excellent news sense and an ability to produce copy quickly, accurately and neutrally;
- Be a solid team player and be prepared to work overtime when required;
- Be reliable, flexible and have initiative; and
- Have a valid driver's licence and a post-matric qualification in journalism and/or proven effective experience.
The job involves, among others:
- Reporting on the activities of Parliament, Parliamentary committees, the National Assembly, and National Council of Provinces;
- Reporting on government and executive activities;
- Reporting on broader national political and other developments;
- Reporting on the activities of political parties and politicians across the spectrum;
- Performing weekend standby duties on a rostered basis; and
- Sub-editing support for Johannesburg desk as required.
