Job Opening: Sports Reporter for ETV (South Africa)

As the first free-to-air commercial television station in South Africa, e.tv has shown enormous growth since being launched in October 1998. With only six hours a day of broadcast time, the channel soon expanded to 24-hour programming. By 2001 e.tv became the largest English-medium channel in the country and the second largest overall, a position it retains with its “yesterday” viewership at 15.2 million (AMPS 2011). The broad appeal of e.tv’s programming has resulted in loyal viewers spanning all age, race and income groups across 80.5% of the South African population.

SPORTS REPORTER (Johannesburg Newsroom)

Reporting to the Executive Producer, Sport, your key performance areas will include:

  • conduct preliminary and follow-up probing telephonic interviews
  • arrange interviews and briefing interviewee on topic beforehand
  • instruct cameraman on set-up of interview (topic, appropriate visuals)
  • present on camera including broadcasting live into a news bulletin when there is breaking news
  • check archives for specific identified news items
  • check articles of interest in newspapers and electronic media (wires)
  • edit pictures and notes and directing editor to cut pictures according to storyline
  • establish and build up a comprehensive contacts resource base
  • identify stories through research, sourcing, networking and studying oversees media
  • keep abreast of sports developments in the region and advising the assignments desk on which issues should be given prominence
  • lay voice on tape
  • provide television reports on the latest sports developments in the region
  • screen functions, events for possible newsworthy items and representing e.tv news at functions
  • write final copy of news bulletin
  • write stories to tie in with pictures
  • perform administrative functions relating to your journalistic work

Requirements:
  • Journalism degree/diploma or equivalent qualification
  • at least 3 years broadcasting experience
  • passion for sport and excellent knowledge thereof
  • ability to combine quality visuals and vibrant scripts
  • presentation skills
  • work to strict deadlines
  • initiative

Note:

The successful candidate will be required to work irregular and long hours, including weekends and public holiday, and standby shifts. This is a contract position only.
