Men's Health requires a qualified and skilled associate editor reporting directly to the editor, and based at Media24 Health's offices in Cape Town.
Key Performance Areas:
1. Edit and project manage the upfront section of the magazine (Malegrams) by conceptualising, writing, commissioning and editing all the content. It requires planning three months in advance, and constant coordination of art and visual requirements with the design team.
2. Maintain and increase the South African content of the magazine by repurposing international Men's Health story ideas and writing original content pertinent to SA men as required.
3. Assist the online editor by creating and editing content daily across all digital media (website and social media), always ensuring the content is compelling and on-brand.
4. Write across all the Men's Health core editorial pillars as required.
5. Contribute to the Men's Health editorial planning and ideas generation in set, monthly meetings with the senior editors. The incumbent will be expected to pitch a minimum of two original content ideas per meeting, and to help find new contributors for the magazine.
6. Meet monthly copy deadlines.
Job Responsibilities:
a. To create, co-ordinate and edit all front-of-book Malegrams content. The writer will be responsible for the veracity and thoroughness of everything written and researched to make sure the final draft is benefit journalism of the highest standard.
b. To localise or rework syndicated copy as and when required. The incumbent must be prepared to investigate, research and rewrite articles across the core editorial pillars.
c. Contribute regularly on the Men's Health website, across related social media platforms and associated digital feeds by updating, writing and uploading content to MH.co.za.
d. Write in-book departments and features as and when required. The incumbent must be prepared to adopt the Men's Health voice and be able to investigate, interview and research on a wide range of topics across the core editorial pillars.
e. To contribute across features, departments and/or any supplements or booklets throughout the year as required.
f. Work closely with the editor, deputy editor and senior editor to generate new story ideas and content to continually develop the core editorial pillars of fitness, health, sex, style and grooming, weight-loss, nutrition, gear and tech.
g. Liaise directly with Men's Health US research editors at Rodale Int'l for the latest health and lifestyle information.
h. Ensure strict adherence to the editorial deadlines as laid down in the production schedule.
i. Ensure all contributors sign the required freelance contract and outline the policies of rights and reuse before engaging services or confirming commissions.
j. Perform any other reasonable editorial duties, as instructed.
k. Act as an ambassador for Men's Health and represent the brand positively at all times.
Required Competencies and/or Experience
• Tertiary qualification in journalism or media studies, or a post-graduate diploma in journalism.
• A minimum of three years experience in consumer magazine journalism, with specific experience in commissioning and editing.
• A proficient writer with solid editing skills and experience that can be adapted to anything from features to headlines and intros.
• A passion for magazine publishing and a working knowledge of magazine production.
• Proficient personal computer skills using Apple Mac software and the internet.
• Excellent communication skills and a strong command of the English language (written and verbal)
• Own transport
• Must provide examples of published work and contactable references are required.
