    The Sub Editor is responsible for working with the digital managers to ensure all copy for each issue is correctly prepared for publication and to help ensure deadlines are met.

    Essential duties and responsibilities:

    The Sub Editor works closely with the Digital Managers (and, when necessary, freelance sub editors) as well as the art team in fulfilling the following:

    Roles and responsibilities

    1) To sub-edit all copy, which includes:
    • correcting factual and language errors
    • checking style and tone
    • ensuring that all copy is as 'reader-friendly' as possible - ie, easy to understand and a pleasure to read
    • inputting (requested) changes accurately
    • localising copy where necessary
    • eliminating inconsistencies, contradictions and repetitions
    • helping to maintain the editorial standard of excellence

    2) To make sure each page has all the necessary elements, which includes:
    • checking layouts for consistency of slugs, fonts and general design style;
    • writing captions or blurbs
    • checking that all necessary bylines and credits appear

    3) To help meet deadlines, which includes:
    • ensuring pages are subbed as early in the process as possible, to avoid delays later
    • keeping the Digital Manager informed of delays and related problems

    Requirements

    • Experience to upload content and images on web-based CMS
    • Basic HTML skills essential
    • Knowledge and exposure to various multimedia formats

    FASHION EDITOR - MEN'S HEALTH : Job Description

    EDITORIAL FUNCTIONS

    1. Create and develop a distinct and commercially viable style and grooming vision that reflects Men's Health fashion identity across all platforms by working closely with the editor and creative director on everything from individual pages to integrated fashion projects
    2. Conceptualise and produce all fashion and grooming pages for Men's Health, including front-of-book Style and Grooming pages (Malegrams), main fashion editorials and all shoots for the bi-annual Guide to Style, Grooming Guide, annual Grooming Awards and Denim Special
    3. Act as the 'face' and 'editor' for the Winter & Summer Style Guides and Date With Denim
    4. Work with the Women's Health fashion editor on collaborative shoots and special projects to leverage 'The Power Couple'
    5. Ensure that Men's Health's fashion and grooming coverage is consistently demographically representative and incorporates the brand's unique features as often as possible
    6. Adapt and repurpose international fashion and grooming content from the US edition
    7. Create and maintain detailed seasonal fashion plans in consultation with the editor
    8. Assist with styling and sourcing for cover and related celebrity shoots
    9. Write and co-ordinate service-oriented copy for all fashion and grooming pages that reinforces the MH tone and brand values & provide correct pricing and product information
    10. Create the right balance of premium and mass-market fashion options for the Men's Health audience, with special attention paid to price-points and number of options per page
    11. Produce regular fashion-related updates, blogs and visuals for Men's Health online and other digital platforms
    12. Manage the fashion department in terms of budgets, invoices, bookings, sourcing and returns
    13. Manage any freelance assistants and/or interns and provide training and mentorship for (in particular) EE fashion candidates
    14. Ensure that production deadlines are met and schedules are set up to allow for the maximum amount of product sourcing (ie. not to coincide with other titles)
    15. Attend all fashion launches (in both JHB and Cape Town), acting as an editorial representative for the MH brand

    COMMERCIAL FUNCTIONS

    1. Maintain and develop the fashion profile of Men's Health (together with the editor) in order to create the right environment for advertisers
    2. Maintain and develop close relationships with suppliers/advertisers to encourage and boost commercial investment and ensure that clients receive added value relative to their support
    3. Produce and style/commission advertorial and sponsored shoots where required
    4. Work closely with the business development manager and deputy editor on creating commercial fashion opportunities that service clients and readers (new projects, supplements, special executions, events)
    5. Assist with fashion-related events eg. shows (Menswear) and reader workshops
    6. Assist with creative mock-ups and presentations related to fashion
    7. Attend and report on relevant launches, feeding fashion brands' strategies back to the commercial team

    Required competencies and/or experience:

    • A tertiary qualification in a fashion- or journalism-related field
    • A minimum of three years' consumer magazine experience
    • An eye for men's fashion and excellent styling abilities
    • A sound knowledge of magazine production
    • Knowledge of and a high level of interest in style, grooming and health
    • A sound knowledge of the men's magazine industry in SA
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work under deadline pressure
    • The ability to represent the brand at function, in media and brand presentations
    • The ability to manage teams and work with commercial partners
