  • The 9th IJP Middle East Fellowship Program for Journalists (€4,000 stipend)

    Deadline: 30 June 2012

In 2012 the IJP are offering for the nineth time a travel and work fellowship for up to five young journalists from the Middle East, especially from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestine to spend a two-month period in Germany. We are doing this in cooperation with governmental institutions, foundations and sponsors in Germany and the Middle East. At the same time, the fellowship is being offered to journalists in Germany, who can apply to spend a two-month period in the Middle East.

The two work fellowships each for journalists from Germany and Israel are named in honour of the journalist Ernst Cramer and the former mayor of Jerusalem Teddy Kollek and their exemplary dedication to the intensification of German-Israeli relations.

The fellowship is intended to enable young journalists to familiarise themselves with the political issues in Germany at an early stage of their career. This will raise awareness of aspects of relations between Germany and the Middle Eastern region in future multipliers and will give them a personal insight into mentality, culture and everyday life in Germany and the European Union.

The practical part of the fellowship ensures contact with colleagues in the region, and it is hoped this contact will be maintained in future years. This is also the intention of future alumni reunions in Berlin.

    MODE OF PAYMENT

The fellowship carries a single payment of 4,000 euro per person. This sum is intended to cover a large proportion of the travel costs, board and lodging. Fellows are expected to contribute a certain amount themselves. There will be no payment for the individual’s work on location as a journalist.

    DATES

The fellowship begins end of October 2012 with an introductory event in Berlin together with the German fellows. This is followed by a fellowship lasting at least two months with a German media outlet.

The branch of the media (newspaper, radio, TV, magazine) will be selected by the fellows, and the actual place of work will then be decided by the organiser in consultation with the fellows. There will be the possibility to extend the stay on an individual basis.

    APPLICATION

Applications, for which there is no special form, are to be submitted by June 30, 2012. The application must be accompanied by a passport photo, a detailed curriculum vitae, and a journalistic appraisal written by the head of department or editor-in-chief. The latter should support the application, guarantee temporary leave of absence for the duration of the fellowship, and serve as evidence of journalistic activity. Samples of work may be enclosed. A very good knowledge of English is expected. While a knowledge of German will naturally be welcomed, this is not an essential requirement for an application. Visa arrangements will be made with the help of the organizers.

After preliminary selection, the finalists might be invited for a selection interview. Legal action in respect of the final decision shall be barred. Notification will be sent to the successful candidates by August 25th.

All fellows undertake to write, upon their return, a report of at least three pages on their experience, activities and impressions in the country.

    DATES

    • Fellowship: 2 months, November/December
    • Application for 2012: June 30, 2012

  • Deadline June 10 | The WAN-IFRA African News Innovation Challenge (grant value: $12,500-$100,000 | Africa-wide)

    Deadline: 10 June 2012

This innovation challenge focuses on journalism and the news media. We are looking for disruptive digital ideas for improving the way that news is collected and disseminated. By digital ideas, we mean tools or strategies that use the Internet, mobile platforms, data driven journalism, computer assisted reporting, digitally augmented reality, or other electronic means to improve the relevance and impact of news media.

Your ideas should be focused on providing pragmatic solutions to realworld challenges facing Africa’s media. Your innovation should fall into any of four broad categories: news gathering; story telling; audience engagement; or the business of news. Within these categories, we are specifically interested in ideas that seek to achieve one or more of the following goals:

    Platforms

Strengthen existing media platforms, or harness new digital platforms for engaging audiences and transmitting news other journalistic content.

    Delivery

Improve the way news reaches audiences, from traditional circulation / airtime management to newer disruptive ‘cross platform’ channels.

    Context

Amplify the relevance and usefulness of news by improving the immediacy, depth and accuracy of journalistic content.

    Reach

Enhance the impact and ‘shelf life’ of news by extending its influence and intrinsic value for both audiences and content services.

    Targeting

Deepen media’s understanding of its audiences and markets by improving user analytics, audience profiling and market segmentation.

    Sustainablity

Boost the media’s resource base by diversifying business models, developing new revenue streams or improving operational efficiencies.

    WHAT WE FUND

We fund news experiments and digital media startups. This means that we will fund the costs associated with developing, testing and scaling a new digital news venture or product. We will not fund conferences, training workshops, nor the salary or operational costs for existing organisations, nor university administration fees, nor other routine business costs.

    FINALISTS WORKSHOP

Finalists will be invited to the OpenNews Camp in Zanzibar, Tanzania, in August for one-on-one workshop sessions with business development mentors and other industry experts. Finalists will use these sessions to refine and strengthen their proposals, as well as develop implementation plans and budgets ahead of final judging.

    SUPPORTING THE WINNERS

Winners will receive cash grants of between $12,000 and $100,000, plus additional business development support, technical mentorship, and marketing support. Winners may also be offered opportunities to pilot their projects in AMI member newsrooms and showcase the results at international conferences or to venture capital funds.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR APPLYING?

The only place you can apply is here on the ANIC website. We will not accept faxes, posted applications, hand deliveries or other channels. All you need to do is answer the 7 questions on the form. Brevity counts. Any supporting media, videos, links to prototypes, etc, can be included with the post, but are not required. The deadline for submissions is July 10 (midnight – Central African Time). No late submissions will be accepted. We will contact semi-finalists for additional information, including a detailed budget, by early August.

    WHO CAN ENTER?

ANIC is an open and worldwide contest. Anyone, anywhere can therefore apply – as long as they have an African partner to help with implementation. There is no other age or geographic restriction. The competition is open to nonprofits, for-profits or individuals of any age, anywhere in the world. Awards to minors will be made to an intermediary designated by ANIC.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRY?

July 10, 2012 at midnight (Central African Time). You might want to use something like World Time Buddy to make sure that you get the time right.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE A RESPONSE?

The dates below are guidelines. Their intention is to give you an idea of the timeframe of the process.

    • May 10, 2012: Contest opens
    • July 10, 2012: Application deadline
    • August 10, 2012: Finalists are at the OpenNews Camp, in Zanzibar
    • September 10, 2012: Finalists submit their final proposals and budget plans
    • November 10, 2012: Winners are announced at the African Media Leaders Forum in Ivory Coast

    PRIZES

The total purse for cash prizes is $1 million.

The African News Innovation Challenge is designed to find and nurture ideas that have the potential to transform journalism and the media industry.

Winners will therefore receive more than just cash grants. They will also receive a combination of technical advice and business mentorship from industry experts, as well as support for marketing their innovations to a wider African and world audience.

Once winners have produced working prototypes and proof-of-concept for their ideas, they will be given the opportunity to showcase their innovations to venture capitalist funds for possible additional investment.

    The Basics:

Winners will receive cash grants of between $12,500 and $100,000, depending on the potential impact and the operational requirements of the project. Each project’s operational requirements will be spelled out in a detailed budget that shortlisted finalists will be required to file in the 2nd phase of judging. Finalists will attend a workshop, in Zanzibar, to help them develop this budget and a related business plan.

    Support Services:

The World Association of Newspapers & News Producers (WAN-IFRA) will provide winners with one-on-one mentorship and technical advice from some of the world’s leading media strategists. WAN-IFRA will also host an intensive business development workshop for finalists, to help them refine and strengthen their proposals.

    Venture Capital:

The ANIC grants that winners receive will function as seed capital for innovators to kickstart their projects. Once they have produced working prototypes with some degree of proof-of-concept, winners will be given the opportunity to pitch their projects to the Media Development Loan Fund’s new digital venture fund for consideration for possible additional investment.

  • Climate Change Media Partnership Fellowship (developing countries)

    Deadline: 29 May 2012

Application Process for CCMP Fellowship programme 2012 is now open until closing on 29 May, 2359 GMT.

The Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) is proud to announce the launch of a Fellowship program that will send journalists to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Doha (COP18) in late 2012. The Fellowships are open predominantly to journalists from developing countries, but journalists from the US and Russia are also welcome to apply.

Formed in 2007 by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Panos London and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the CCMP has brought developing country journalists to the annual UN climate summits for the past five years. This has enabled them to cover the summit for their home media organizations, work with experienced and knowledgeable journalists from around the world, and gain a multifaceted understanding of climate change's global impact. Numerous regional organizations also play a supporting role in the partnership.

As part of the fellowships, the CCMP will cover travel, lodging and daily subsistence expenses, arrange press accreditation at COP18, and provide other support services. The Fellows will benefit from a series of specially designed activities, including an orientation session, breakfast briefings, a field trip and a media clinic.

To be eligible for this fellowship applicants must be:

    • A journalist from the developing world, USA or Russia
    • Able to illustrate passion and commitment to reporting on climate change issues
    • Able to travel to Doha, Qatar to arrive no later than 29th November 2012 and leave no later than 8th December 2012
    • Have proven support from an editor, producer or supervisor

The CCMP fully respects the editorial independence of all journalists. Throughout the conference, Fellows are free to report as they see fit. As well as the requirements above we ask that journalists agree to provide copies or summaries of all the stories they file during COP18 for posting on our websites and that they show collegial attitude towards other Fellows. One of the main benefits of this program will be the opportunity for Fellows to exchange views and information with their journalistic peers from around the world.

Criteria for evaluating applicants will include the prospective Fellow's demonstrated interest in climate change issues; their audience; and the ability of the Fellowship to provide an opportunity for those journalists who might not otherwise have a chance to cover such events. Fellows represent a diverse range of experience and regions, though a primary goal of this program is to reach audiences – particularly marginalized communities – who are currently underserved when it when it comes to climate information.

At the moment, the CCMP has funding to bring a small number of Fellows, but is actively working to increase support in order to increase those numbers. In addition to selecting the initial slate of Fellows, targeted to be announced in September a waitlist will also be created to select additional journalists if more funding becomes available.

Applicants are required to submit an application before the May 29, 2012 deadline. We expect to announce the winners of the Fellowships in September. To apply for a fellowship please click here.

  • Deadline May 31 | Fully Funded: The Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme 2012 for Journalists from Developing Countries

    Deadline: 31 May 2012

Since 1981, the United Nations Department of Public Information has sponsored an annual fellowship programme for junior and mid-level broadcasters and journalists from developing countries and countries with economies in transition at UN Headquarters in New York. Established in 1980 by the General Assembly, it provides journalists an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the work of the United Nations.

This year, the Programme is expected to include 12 junior and mid-level media professionals for a period of five weeks. The first four weeks will take place in New York and the last week in Geneva. The participants are recruited through UN field offices whose countries are selected on a rotating basis. As of 2011, 499 journalists and broadcasters from 165 countries have taken part in the Programme.

The Programme exposes participants to the work of the UN and offers them an opportunity to periodically prepare news stories on behalf of their news organizations. The Programme is not intended to provide basic skills training to broadcasters and journalists, as all participants are already working as media professionals.

The Programme does not lead to employment by the United Nations. Upon completion of the Programme, participants are expected to return home to continue to work in journalism or broadcasting and help promote better understanding of the United Nations.

  • The African News Innovation Challenge

    Deadline: 10 July 2012

  • Open to Writers/ Journalists of Any Nationality: Pulitzer Center Travel Grants Program (worldwide)

(Note: Grants are open to all journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers; staff journalists as well as free-lancers of any nationality are eligible to apply.)

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting provides travel grants to cover hard costs associated with upcoming travel for an international reporting project. Our ideal project offers print, photography, radio, and video.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting funds international travel costs associated with reporting projects on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream American media. The amount of individual travel grants will depend on the specific project and detailed budget planning. Most awards fall in the range of $2,000 to $10,000 but depending on project specifics may be as much as $20,000.

On approved projects, half of the grant amount is generally paid just before travel and the remainder on submission of the principal material for publication or broadcast. Specific grant terms are negotiated during the application process.

DISTRIBUTION: Proposed projects must include a credible plan for broad dissemination of the resulting work in U.S. media (print and/or broadcast). Applicants should be able to demonstrate interest from editors and/or producers working in wide-reaching U.S. media outlets. The credibility of a distribution plan is generally most evident in an applicant's track-record working with the listed outlets. Please do not have editors send letters simply stating they would consider the work. Letters from editors and/or producers who have worked with you in the past, and are interested in working with you again, are encouraged.

CROSS-PLATFORM: The Pulitzer Center is increasingly seeking multi-media projects that combine print/photography and video to explore the issues. We encourage applicants to create partnerships with others and propose a complementary suite of deliverables. If you are only working in one medium, you may still apply.

HOW TO APPLY: Applications should be submitted by email to travelgrants[AT]pulitzercenter.org. Even if you are submitting sample materials via hard copies, electronic versions of the proposal MUST also be e-mailed to this address or else they will not be considered.

Applications must be received in English.

APPLICATIONS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING IN THE BODY OF THE E-MAIL:

    • A description of the proposed project, including distribution plan, in 250 words or less
    • A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Travel grants cover hard costs associated with the reporting, please do not include stipends for the applicants. Fixer/translator/driver fees are acceptable
    • Three links to samples of work if available online (if not available, please attach to the e-mail; video samples can be sent by mail to below address in DVD format)
    • Three professional references. These can be either contact information, or letters of recommendation (can be attached or sent separately). The latter is encouraged when letters from interested producers or editors are available.

    As attachment: Curriculum vitae

Applications may also include a more detailed description of project but this will be considered as optional supplement only. The most important part of the submission is the 250-word summary.

    DEADLINE: Rolling

Within a week of your submission, you should receive a confirmation of receipt. Typically applications that are received in a given month receive a response by the end of the following month, with an emphasis on making Pulitzer Center projects as timely and newsworthy as possible. If your proposal requires immediate attention, please note why in your cover letter.

Address for mailing hard copies and DVDs (remember to also send the electronic versions to travelgrants[AT]pulitzercenter.org):

  • Open to African Journalists: The Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship (NY, USA)

    Deadline: 20 July 2012

(Note: Approximately half of the previous Fellowship participants are based in North America, with the balance drawn from Central and South America, Europe, the Asia Pacific region, Africa and the Mideast.)

The Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship is a unique seminar program for mid-career journalists who want to deepen their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury, and improve reporting on violence, conflict and tragedy.

Reporting responsibly and credibly on violence or traumatic events — on street crime and family violence, natural disasters and accidents, war and genocide — is a great challenge. Since 1999 the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, has offered the annual Ochberg Felliowships to outstanding midcareer journalists interesting in exploring these critical issues.

Fellows attend an intensive weeklong program of seminars and discussions held at Columbia University in New York City. Program activities include background briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in the trauma and mental health fields; conversations with journalist colleagues on issues of ethics, craft and other aspects of professional practice; and a host of other opportunities for intellectual engagement and peer learning.

This year’s program will begin Monday, October 22 and conclude Friday, October 26, 2012.

The Fellowship is led by a core faculty of prominent journalists and mental health professionals associated with the Dart Center, along with a wide range of visiting faculty. Some recent visiting Fellowship faculty have included:

    • Judith Lewis Herman, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and author of Trauma and Recovery.
    • Jonathan Shay, M.D. Ph.D., Clinical Psychiatrist, MacArthur Fellow and author of Achilles in Vietnam and Odysseus in America.
    • Chicago “violence interrupter” Eddie Bocanegra with Alex Kotlowitz, producer of the documentary film “The Interrupters” and author, There Are No Children Here.
    • Jessica Stern, author of Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill and Denial: A Memoir of Terror.
    • Steven Southwick, M.D., Glenn H. Greenberg Professor of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine and co-author, Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life's Greatest Challenges.

The Fellowship was established in 1999 by the Dart Center in partnership with the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. The fellowship is named in honor of psychiatrist Frank Ochberg, M.D., a pioneer in trauma study.

The Ochberg Fellowship covers all travel, accommodations and other expenses directly related to program participation. The program does not cover costs related to visas, health insurance or ground transportation in fellows’ home cities.

    ELIGIBILITY

Dart Center Ochberg Fellowships are open to outstanding mid-career journalists working across all media.

Past Fellows have ranged from small-town and regional general-assignment and crime reporters to war photographers and foreign correspondents for international news organizations. Applicants’ work must demonstrate journalistic excellence and a strong track record of covering violence and its impact on individuals, families or communities.

Fellowships are open to print, broadcast and online reporters, photographers, editors and producers with no fewer than five years’ full-time journalism experience.

All fellowship seminars are conducted in English. Fellows must be fluent in spoken English to participate in the program.

    APPLICATION DEADLINE AND DETAILS

This year's application deadline is July 20, 2012. Selected fellows will be notified by August 20, 2012.

To apply, please complete the online Ochberg Fellowship Application and submit it electronically, as described. A letter of interest (no more than one or two pages in length), resume, two samples of work and two letters of recommendation are required for the application. Instructions for uploading are included with the application.

Note: Application materials must be submitted in English. If your journalistic work is conducted in a language other than English, please submit two sets of work samples - one in its original language and another in English translation. For non-English audio, video or multimedia, you may submit a translated transcript.

    SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants are reviewed by a judging committee comprised of Dart Center staff, Fellowship core faculty and past Fellows. Selection is not based on any single factor. Among judges' considerations are whether applicants:

    • demonstrate consistent and thoughtful journalistic engagement with issues of violence, conflict, tragedy and their aftermath;
    • have demonstrated journalistic excellence and leadership;
    • will likely benefit personally and professionally from the Fellowship experience and contribute meaningfully to the program.

Other considerations may include geographic and other diversity, and overall group composition.

The judging committee will review applications and select 10-15 fellows for 2012. Selected fellows will be notified by phone and email in mid-August.

  • Deadline May 18 | The Pritzker Fellowships: Training a Diverse New Generation of Journalists (worldwide)

    Deadline: 18 May 2012

Note: applicants do not have to be an American citizen to take part in the program but international applicants must obtain their own visas. The fellowship is open to anyone with an interest in pursuing radio, web-based or other forms of journalism and to a broad range of individuals, ages and backgrounds.

The Pritzker Fellowships program is designed to fulfill our most important goal: to discover, encourage and train the best possible representatives of a diverse new generation of public-media talent.

    WHAT THE PRITZKER FELLOWSHIPS OFFER

Two Pritzker Fellowships will be awarded each year to diverse candidates who aspire to become journalists and who show promise as radio producers, journalists and story tellers.

The Pritzker Fellowships will offer high level mentorship and professional development focused on journalism. Pritzker Fellows will be given rigorous training in public radio journalism and will work alongside some of the nation’s most respected reporters, producers and editors.

Each Pritzker Fellow will receive a stipend of $20,000 and will receive the same benefits enjoyed by employees of Chicago Public Media.

Applications are now open for the 2012 Prizker fellowships. You can apply online here.

    PROGRAM CURRICULUM

Throughout the training period, the Pritzker Fellows will work on many projects and develop skills within their chosen arena. The training will be extremely targeted and in-depth.

Pritzker Fellows will start off closely observing station life – from story production to field work. They will be given the opportunity to meet our experts and learn more about what they do.

Throughout the first months, Fellows will be given basic story production and editing training, including:

    • Journalism, ethics training
    • Audio and video production
    • Writing for the radio and web
    • On-air skills
    • Web production

Based on specific areas of interest, Pritzker Fellows will be paired with a mentor for the remainder of the program. That mentor will be a senior level journalist or producer who will provide rigorous coaching, critique, hands-on opportunities, and special assignments.

By the end of the program, each Pritzker Fellow will be expected to produce a feature story as their final project. Throughout their months at the station, they will work closely with their mentor to define the project and to receive the training needed to make it a success.

    DURATION

Professional training will be provided at the WBEZ studios over a period of nine months, with full 40-hour work weeks required. The program will begin in July 2011 and conclude in April 2012. Fellows are expected to make the program their primary focus during the term of the Fellowships.

Each Pritzker Fellow will be awarded a stipend of $20,000 and will receive the same benefits enjoyed by employees of Chicago Public Media. The stipend will open the door to applicants who otherwise would not be in a position to consider participation in an extended training program.

Anyone with an interest in pursuing radio, web-based or other forms of journalism and meets the requirements below is eligible.

The program is open to a broad range of individuals, ages and backgrounds. We especially encourage interested minority candidates to apply. Consideration will be given only to candidates nominated by a community-based not–for-profit organization and who possess the following characteristics:
