  • Job Opening: Editor for International Agency for Research on Cancer (World Health Organization)

    In parallel with the research programmes of IARC, devoted to studies in cancer aetiology and prevention, the Agency issues a Scientific Publications series, an IARC Monographs series, an IARC Handbooks series, Technical Publications and Annual Reports, which make current knowledge and research results in this field available to the international scientific and public health communities. These activities fall within the responsibility of the Communications Group (COM), which reports directly to the Director's Office.

    Description of duties:

    Within the Communications Group (COM), the incumbent is responsible for the assembly, editing and proofreading of scientific manuscripts in English for IARC publications submitted by Agency staff and their collaborators, and for providing advice on editorial matters and publishing procedures to scientific staff.

    The main objective of the work is to ensure the timely production of accurate, well-written and attractive publications.

    1) Edit manuscripts for IARC Scientific Publications for correctness of language and for scientific clarity, including an average three Monographs per year;

    2) Assemble and edit manuscripts and illustrations for the IARC Biennial Report and Interim Annual Report, and proofread, index and organize printing of the former; ensure necessary coordination with translator for production of French edition.

    3) Organize and, when necessary, carry out page layout; check proofs for IARC Scientific and other Publications.

    4) Edit manuscripts drafted by IARC scientists for publication in scientific journals or books, for grant proposals or for inclusion in official documents, as necessary.

    5) Participate in scientific meetings to assemble, revise and correct documents under review for incorporation in Monographs and Handbooks.

    6) Participate in the selection of freelance editors, when required, review and revise their work.

    7) Provide information on forthcoming publications to the relevant sales and distribution services.

    8) Perform any other related duties assigned by the supervisor.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Essential: University degree in English or in one of the biological/biomedical sciences.

    Desirable: College/University training in editing.

    Skills:

    General knowledge of the natural sciences, biochemistry, biology, medicine.

    Training in editorial and publishing activities.

    Computer literacy and knowledge of software applications to editing and publishing procedures.

    Required WHO competencies:

    Ability to:

    - Communicate in a credible and effective way;
    - Know and manage yourself;
    - Produce results;
    - Respect and promote individual and cultural differences.

    Experience:

    Essential: A minimum of five years of professional experience, including one to two years at the international level, in editing articles in the biomedical field.

    Desirable: Research experience in the biomedical field.

    Languages:

    English mother tongue essential, with a working knowledge of French desirable.

    Additional Information:

  • For French/ English Writers: The Camac - Fondation Tenot Writers Residency in France

    Since 1999, Camac Art Centre with Fondation Ténot has promoted creativity and international exchange in the artist community. Camac and Fondation Ténot offers each year a residency bursary to one visual artist, one writer and one musician or composer in order to create new career prospects for artists.

    The Bursary

    * 2 month residency (dates to be arranged by mutual agreement between the artist and the institution.)
    * Return ticket, board and lodging.
    * Private bedroom with bathroom, individual studio.
    * The laureate must provide his/her own visas and health insurance.

    Eligibility

    Established poets, novel writers and playwrights with demonstrated ability in French, English or Spanish. The laureate will be requested to contribute published texts to the Camac library.
