    3) To help meet deadlines, which includes:
    • ensuring pages are subbed as early in the process as possible, to avoid delays later
    • keeping the Digital Manager informed of delays and related problems

    In parallel with the research programmes of IARC, devoted to studies in cancer aetiology and prevention, the Agency issues a Scientific Publications series, an IARC Monographs series, an IARC Handbooks series, Technical Publications and Annual Reports, which make current knowledge and research results in this field available to the international scientific and public health communities. These activities fall within the responsibility of the Communications Group (COM), which reports directly to the Director's Office.

    Description of duties:

    Within the Communications Group (COM), the incumbent is responsible for the assembly, editing and proofreading of scientific manuscripts in English for IARC publications submitted by Agency staff and their collaborators, and for providing advice on editorial matters and publishing procedures to scientific staff.

    The main objective of the work is to ensure the timely production of accurate, well-written and attractive publications.

    1) Edit manuscripts for IARC Scientific Publications for correctness of language and for scientific clarity, including an average three Monographs per year;

    2) Assemble and edit manuscripts and illustrations for the IARC Biennial Report and Interim Annual Report, and proofread, index and organize printing of the former; ensure necessary coordination with translator for production of French edition.

    3) Organize and, when necessary, carry out page layout; check proofs for IARC Scientific and other Publications.

    4) Edit manuscripts drafted by IARC scientists for publication in scientific journals or books, for grant proposals or for inclusion in official documents, as necessary.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Essential: University degree in English or in one of the biological/biomedical sciences.

    We are seeking an experienced journalist to join a growing team of business news reporters and desk editors on Thomson Reuters Cairo-based Arabic news service and help increase our production of Arabic financial news. The successful candidate must be able to provide speedy and accurate Arabic translation of Reuters news items from English. He/she will play a key role in building up the Arabic equities and treasury news file to enable Reuters to successfully target Arabic-reading financial professionals as part of plans to expand Reuters Middle East coverage. The job will also require performing original reporting and other newsroom duties like research and media monitoring. Occasional translation from Arabic into English may also be required. He/she should have a track record in translating company, stock markets and macroeconomic news, and must have the flexibility to adapt to new formats of news delivery and news presentation. Excellent financial news judgment, proven writing skills and a competitive spirit are essential.

    The HSRC Press, the publishing arm of the Human Sciences Research Council, is currently the leading publisher of independently evaluated, peer-reviewed scholarly/academic works in Africa.

    The HSRC Press is offering the following opportunity (based in Cape Town) to an individual with a serious interest in the business of scholarly book publishing.

    Commissioning Editor

    This is a key position in managing the publishing list for the Press, liaising with authors and ensuring that publications of exceptional quality are selected for publication. The incumbent will be required to work both internally with HSRC researchers in advising on effective publishing strategies, as well as externally in selecting proposals from authors and working with an independent Editorial Board who function in an advisory capacity to the Press.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Assisting in the planning and conceptualisation of publishing projects;
    • Managing peer review processes as well as commissioning and manuscript review processes
    • Managing the pre-production phase of projects including budgets, contracts and schedules;
    • Working sensitively and efficiently with authors;
    • Acting as the HSRC Press Editorial Board Secretary;
    • Briefing marketing and editorial colleagues on relevant information;
    • Managing backlist.

    Key requirements:
    • Relevant experience in the publishing industry;
    • Post-graduate qualification in Humanities or the Social Sciences or related disciplines;
    • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, email and the internet;
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively to demanding deadlines;

    The main responsibility is to sub-edit all copy for publication, ensuring that it is stylistically consistent, factually and grammatically correct, and adheres to O standards.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    •Running the sub-editing department: Managing the second copy editor to ensure deadlines are met, keeping track of style decisions and setting up systems for keeping copy flowing.
