The main responsibility is to sub-edit all copy for publication, ensuring that it is stylistically consistent, factually and grammatically correct, and adheres to O standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Running the sub-editing department: Managing the second copy editor to ensure deadlines are met, keeping track of style decisions and setting up systems for keeping copy flowing.
•edit all copy, both local and international (checking facts, grammar, consistency of house style, cutting copy to length and localising where necessary; standardising layout of pages – fonts, slugs, bylines, page numbers etc.; researching the accuracy of information and obtaining sources to substantiate, often from the Internet)
• edit and check all advertorials and promotional pages to ensure they are in keeping with the house style (in terms of visual and copy-related brand guidelines)
• keep the O style guide up to date as a reference for all who need it.
• occasionally copy-edit supplements and promo/marketing extras (like Breathing Space Calendar, press releases etc.)
• assist the production manager with the daily production flow (tracking job bags, agreeing on daily targets, updating status lists; keeping records of circulation and job bag comment sheets from previous issues)
• input comments and text changes requested by senior editors after circulation
• Liaise with the O US contact: Send PDFs to the States for approval and input changes where necessary
• write copy for Breathing Space and blurbs for Contents page each month
• write monthly e-mail subscriber newsletter for the promotions department
• occasionally write book reviews for Reading Room
• occasionally write captions and headlines
• Manage the repro cycle (with the senior designer). This involves:
–Checking pagination against the flatplan, consistency of slugs etc. Reading final proofs and inputting final copy changes; keeping track of page sign-offs.
• Manage the copy editor and, when necessary, freelance copy editors, which includes:
–managing work flow within the subs department
–overseeing the copy editor in sourcing the monthly LYBL opener poem
–assisting with recruitment, training and performance appraisals

Requirements
•Two years’ experience as a copy editor/chief copy editor an advantage;
•Familiar with using the Internet as a research tool.
•Software: In Design, MS OFFICE suite
•Valid Drivers License
