Developing Markets, a division of Media24, has two vacancies for a Chief Copy Editor for True Love and Move magazine based in Sandton. This person will report directly to the Editors.
The successful candidate will be a team player with excellent English language and communication skills and a positive attitude. He/She will manage a team of copy editors. The incumbent should have a high level of emotional intelligence, be energetic, efficient and passionate and understand black readers.
Responsibilities include copy-editing and rewriting, proofreading and preparing pages for final sign-off, updating and maintaining the style guide, managing workload on the copy desk and ensuring smooth workflow between the copy desk and other departments within the magazine. In addition, the Chief Copy Editor is expected to be committed to constantly improving the quality of the magazine’s copy-editing team by giving regular feedback both to the copy desk and the True Love editors and identifying areas that can be improved through training. A willingness to mentor young writers would be advantageous.
Desired Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
* A minimum of five years’ experience working as a Copy Editor, preferably on a monthly consumer magazine title
* A diploma or degree in English/Journalism or related fields
* An ability to work fast and accurately and adhere to deadlines
* A sound knowledge of Adobe InDesign
* The willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends
* Exceptional communication and organisational skills
* An excellent work ethic
* A sharp eye for detail
* The ability to work as part of a team and manage a pool of freelancers and permanent staff
Command of an indigenous language is an added bonus.
