Job Opening: Editor for Memeburn.com (South Africa)

Memeburn.com is a multi-award winning online publication that has quickly established itself as one of the country's major tech sites, now featuring in the Effective Measure top 100. The site focuses on Innovation, mobile technology, the start-up scene, general tech culture and online business. A mixture of the site's own journalists, contributors, paid columnists and key opinion leaders world-wide write for Memeburn, providing their insights on the online world.

Recently Memeburn launched a sister site Gearburn.com and will soon launch Venture Burn.com. The site is looking for an editor to run the site on an editorial level and assist with strategic editorial decisions, management of editorial staff and policy. The editor would also conduct interviews and write award-winning stories that rock the social media and technology scene.

• The job is Cape Town-based (although there may be an opportunity to work from Joburg in the future).
• You must have experience of at least eight years (or more) in an editor role or a senior editorial position in a tech or digital media field.

Job Description:

• Be responsible for the editorial management and direction of Memeburn.com and ancillary sites
• Manage, guide, hire and mentor editorial staff
• Be responsible for the editorial strategy of Memeburn.com
• Ensure that standards on the site are of the highest quality at all times
• Appoint and manage the site's contributors and columnists
• Hold regular editorial and news-gathering meetings
• Represent the brand at conferences, present or chair panels on behalf of the company if requested
• Conduct interviews and write articles on a regular basis for the site

Requirements:

• You need to be a geek who is passionate about the online sector. You need to be immersed in and connected to what is going on in the sector.
• You're able to hold an in-depth conversation and build an argument on why Android trumps iOS or why Twitter is better than Facebook. You'll work up a sweat arguing why Wordpress kills Joomla.
• An in-depth knowledge of the digital, online and tech industry. Knowledge of the startup scene would be a bonus. A background in business journalism would be a bonus.
• You need to be self-motivated, proactive, possess analytical skills, be energetic and results driven
• You need to be a newshound, with a drive to learn new things and grow in the industry
• Outstanding communication skills - written, verbal, presentation
• Have the ability to work to tight deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills
• "9-5" means nothing to you, because this is more than just a job - it's a passion and a calling
