  • Sunpenny Publishing Short Story Competition (eligible: South Africa)

    Deadline: 31 March 2012

This competition is for short stories of all kinds accepted in the Rules below. We believe firmly in competitions as a way to encourage writers (a) to put pen to paper, and (b) to believe in themselves. Practice of your profession is essential, and this is one way to get people writing with purpose. Many people also love the challenge, and it drives them to produce material they might not otherwise have explored, developing them in unexpected ways!

PRIZES: First prize £150 second prize £75. Third prize is two of our books. Winning and Commended entries will be included in an Anthology. Note that if there are enough entries, prizes may rise in value. If there are too few, prizes will be adjusted fairly according to entry fees received.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: 31 March 2012. Winners will be announced by the end of May 2012.

ENTRY FEE: £4.00 / US$8.00 / ZAR40.00 (special allowance for Africa) per entry. This can be paid either online (see bottom of page), by cheque/check, or by deposit into one of our bank accounts (USA, South Africa, UK) - email us for details.

Fees are NOT refundable - please ensure you read the rules carefully. If you are paying online below, this will automatically be charged at £4.00 - so if you are in Southern Africa, it will be more than we are asking Southern African entrants; we suggest that you email us for our SA bank details, and make a direct deposit - see details at bottom of page.

CRITIQUES: If you require a professional critique, please make a separate payment for this. Short story critiques are charged at £18.00 (this is roughly just £6/hr).

    GUIDELINES:

This competition is OPEN to anyone, of all ages and levels of experience. We are also running a "Christian Writers" competition. For children aged up to (and including) 14, please see our "Young Writers" competition page.

Please DO NOT enter stories written for children. They cannot be judged equally against stories written for adults. We do not yet run a competition for children's stories.

Please be sure you have the rights to enter this competition; entrants take full responsibility for copyright issues. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

Stories may be up to but no longer than 4,000 words, in any style and on any subject (except those outlined in the Rules below). Please do not be offensive in your stories, or use graphic sexual or violent detail or language.

Please submit by EMAIL, if at all possible. If email is absolutely impossible, then hard (paper) copy submissions will be accepted, but as these have to be scanned into our system, which is very time consuming, we discourage this.

Mark entries clearly with the competition title " Sunpenny OPEN Competition", and submit as below.

If you really can only submit hard copy, PLEASE: do not staple your work. Staples have to be removed for scanning and our fingers and our time both suffer.

We acknowledge receipt, and notify winners, by email, so please include an email address. If you do not have an email address yourself, please give us the email of a friend or relative through whom you can be contacted. If entering by post, we can only let you know your entry has been received if you include a stamped self-addressed postcard or envelope to be sent back to you.
Paper entries can not be returned, as they have ID numbers put onto every page, and are then scanned for transfer to the judges. They are in no condition to be used again.

Digital entries: We accept most file formats - MS Word, OfficeOrg, Wordperfect, RTF, PDF, text, and others. If you send us something we can't read, we'll contact you. Please scan for viruses BEFORE sending!

    HOW TO FORMAT YOUR ENTRIES:

Please supply a separate cover page with Title, Entrant Name, Address, Email, and the entry's Word Count.

Each page of the story must have page number and title of the story ONLY. Do not include your name or any other identifier on any page of the entry itself. (All entries are given an ID reference number and separated from the cover page to ensure fair judging.)

Entries must be typed on one side of the paper only, and neatly set out as you would a book manuscript (indented paragraphs without blank lines between them; single spaced). We cannot accept hand-written entries.

Please, no fancy fonts! We like good old 12-point Times New Roman, or a similar serif font. We don't like sans-serif fonts like Arial; they are harder on the eyes.

As a guideline, we like a good inch of margin on both sides as well as top and bottom. We now prefer single spacing.

Please check and polish work carefully; if your entry is too liberally sprinkled with poor grammar and spelling, and careless typos, it will be marked down in the final judging. Writing is a language craft, and an artist must (a) know their craft and (b) take pride in their work. If you don't care, we won't be inclined to, either! (Exceptions are made for dyslexic or otherwise handicapped entrants; please make a note on your entry if this is the case.)

    COMPETITION RULES:

Entry submission indicates acceptance of all rules, guidelines, terms and conditions.

Stories may be anything up to but no longer than 4,000 words, in any style and on any subject. However, they must not promote racism, gratuitous sex or violence, foul language, or anything else that does not conform to good family and moral values (and we get to decide!).

The competition is open to anyone worldwide provided that the fee is received in either British Pounds, Euros, US Dollars or South African Rands.

The competition closes on 31 March 2012, and winners will be announced and displayed on our web site by end of May 2012.

Prize winners will be notified by email as well as named on the web site; please ensure you supply a valid email address with your entry, even if sent in by post, unless you do not have one - in which case, please state this on your entry title page. Please also check the web site at the beginning of June, in case you don't receive an email for any reason.

Prizes will be paid via PayPal, UK £ cheque/check, deposit into your bank where possible, or any other reasonable, cost-effective method mutually agreed.

Prizes must be claimed within 30 days of being published on the web site and contacted by email. After 30 days, prizes will be forfeited.

All entries must be written in English. Other languages will not be accepted.

You may enter as many different works as you like, as long as each is accompanied by an entry fee.

Entries must be in entirety the original work of the entrant, and the entrant must fully own all necessary rights to enter this competition.

Writers retain copyright, but give permission for their work to be published on this website at our discretion, and in any one future anthology produced by Sunpenny Limited or its imprints.
The judges' decision is final; no individual correspondence or disputes will be entered into.
In extremis, deadlines and any other dates may be changed by Sunpenny Limited without notice for any legitimate reason. Likewise in extremis prizes may be adjusted, but our reasons will be good should either of these necessities arise! In the event that we simply don't receive a reasonable number of entries, we reserve the right to cancel the competition and return entry fees.

We reserve the right to adjust these rules without notice.

Entrants are responsible for completing the submission process effectively. We cannot take responsibility for entries lost in the post or in cyberspace. If you encounter problems, please let us know timeously.

    TO ENTER:

Please ensure that you have read all the rules and guidelines above before entering! Submitting your entry indicates full acceptance of these rules no refunds will be given.

  • Call for Submissions - Afrofutures: a New Anthology of Science Fiction by African Writers

    Deadline: 31 May 2012

2012 will no doubt mark many firsts, and we hope that the AfroSF anthology will be among them. This will be the first African Science Fiction anthology open to submissions from all African writers (only) across the continent and Diaspora.

This particular genre has been somewhat neglected in the burgeoning African literature scene, something we hope that this anthology will help to address and encourage more of. We have a firm belief that the opportunities that SciFi engenders with its broad scope for imagination, invention, metaphor, political and social commentary, will take African writers out of their current comfort zones and into new territories.

Established African writers like Nnedi Okorafor (2011 World Fantasy Award winner), and Lauren Beukes (2011 Arthur C. Clarke Award winner) are already signed up for the anthology.

The anthology will be selected and edited by African Author, Ivor Hartmann and published by StoryTime (Publishing).

    AfroSF Short Stories Submission

    Size limit: 1500 - 8000 words

Works submitted may be: Science Fiction short stories only.

    1) Only African writers are eligible (writers born in Africa, or having domiciled in for over 10 years, and/or holding citizenship in an African country)

    2) The submitted work must be an original work, nothing that infringes the copyright of, or is derived from, another author's work of fiction, is overly lewd, hate speech, etc.

    3) Must be unpublished (not previously published in print or online).

    4) No simultaneous submissions (only submitted to AfroSF and no other publications).

    5) No multiple submissions (submit only one work).

    6) Submission format: single line spaced, font Times New Roman 12pt, one line space between paragraphs, no indents, and set to UK English.

    7) Deadline for submissions is May 31st 2012.

If you're wondering what exactly Science Fiction is have a read of this article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction). Also please note your story does not have to be based in Africa, it's SF after all the only limits are your imagination (within plausible SF scenarios of course, so do your research well before submitting).

  • Creative Alliance's Literary Star Search (Nigeria)

Now at your doorstep is the biggest and innovative platform for writers to express themselves in bold narratives in an expanded frontier never before known in prose, especially the short story format. There is a need to expand the literary space to accommodate everyone with a noble idea to share with humanity. But often, the chances and choices are few, too few, especially for writers to share from their ever fertile imagination that is ready to extend the boundary of culture and society with a view to enriching them.

Literary Star Search, as an affiliate company of Creative Alliance Nigeria Limited (Creative Alliance for short), is committed to broadening the literary landscape to accommodate more conversation with and interrogation of culture and society. With values believed to be going down the wrong way, it’s only literature and its literary men and women that can halt the slide through reinventing social order by bringing the past to bear on the future at the junction of the present in a seamless manner so as to preserve the health of humanity.

So, out there are stars yet undiscovered, who, nonetheless, have so much to say to humanity to enoble society and culture. The rest of us dare not ignore them. They need to be searched out, evaluated and rewarded, and their messages to society harnessed, like those gone before them – Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, J.P. Clark, Gabriel Okara, Buchi Emecheta, Flora Nwapa, Ben Okri, Sefi Atta, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Wale Okediran, Femi Osofisan, Ben Okri, Biyi Bandele, Helon Habila, Chika Unigwe, and so on - to revitalise society and instil in it wholesome values to sustain it to the next generation and beyond.

It is the belief of Liteary Star Search that hidden stars abound in the literary landscape, but they remain hidden, and may remain hidden if something drastic is not done.

So that while stars are being made and hugely rewarded in virtually other areas of society - beauty pageantry, music, movies, reality shows and dance (all considered probably fairly less enobling and so of little value to society’s wellbeing; indeed, the orientation of music and movies towards overt sexual displays have corrupted society more than can be quantified), writers, especially literary writers, are largely left in the cold, and made to watch from the sidelines. Yet, writing is one area where worldbeaters have been made in our midst, men and women, who have put us on the world map as part of the world’s cultural citizens.

Indeed, literary art or literature is the most accomplished of Nigerian arts and culture sector. Sadly, it is the least hyped and least valued in its cultural re-orientation of the citizenry and society generally. Of course, those who practice it (or write it) equally suffer the worse form of obscurity; they are least known and celebrated, whereas those in the faddish areas of the arts take centre-stage as heroes or celebrities, even if dubious nature!

The mantra of a literary prize

While there is abundance of potential star writers, there is little opportunity for them to rise and shine! Reward for them is still criminally low; they are just too few prizes on the local scene for those with something important to say. Inability to throw up star writers and truly celebrate them has created the absence of writers as models for society, especially for the young, impressionable members of society to follow.

This has the multiplier effect of alienating young ones from reading what writers produce as a disconnect between the two has become so obvious. The connection between writers and literacy cannot be hard to imagine; that there is a lack of a reading habit in the populace, especially of literary materials, therefore, becomes logical in the sense that writers have not been made a centrality of our consciousness; they simply are the heroes young ones want to emulate to deepen society’s core values.

To address these areas, icons in the field of literary creativity have to be made, particularly young icons – the way it is in dance, music, movies, dance, pageantry and reality shows. These icons will lure young readers back to the literary space and books, especially when they see in the youthful icons that are made a mirror image of themselves. These creative stars will then fire their aspirations because they are the ones young people want to emulate.

This is the purpose Liteary Star Search. It will serve to throw up star writers, reward them with grand price.

    How to Apply

WRITE Yourself to FAME & FORTUNE!!! in the Liteary Star Search contest for Nigeria’s star writers in the SHORT STORY category (not more than 3,500 words long) in the One Million Naira Grand Prize, with N300,000 and N200,000 respectively for the second and third best places. • Oprah Magazine Short Story Competition 2011 (South Africa)

    Deadline: 14 October 2011

This October, O, The Oprah Magazine (Twitter: @OMagazineSA) will contribute to the revival of the short-story genre by offering one aspirant writer the chance to see their work published in the February 2012 issue of O magazine and, in the selection process, have their writing read by esteemed local and international authors.

In what can only be described as a coup for the magazine, literary greats Dr. Maya Angelou (Pulitzer Prize nominee and author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings) and Alexander McCall Smith (author of the prolific The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series) have come on board to choose the winner of O’s inaugural short-story competition. Dr. Angelou, whom Oprah calls her mentor-mother-sister-friend, is one of the greatest voices in contemporary literature. She has been awarded more than 30 honorary degrees. McCall Smith, a Scotland-based former professor of medical law, has written more than 50 books, including children’s books, short-story collections and five series. The most recent novel in his popular No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party, was published earlier this year.

South African author and scriptwriter Lauren Beukes, 2011 winner of the prestigious Arthur C. Clarke award for best science-fiction novel for Zoo City (Twitter: @laurenbeukes), and writer and columnist Ndumiso Ngcobo (Twitter: @NdumisoNgcobo) will represent the South African perspective. The multi-talented Ngcobo is a Sunday Times columnist, screenwriter, satirist and presenter on KZN’s East Coast Radio. The former high-school maths and science teacher is also the author of two essay collections, Some of My Best Friends Are White and Is It Coz I’m Black?

“Short stories are a great way for writers to hone their storytelling. It's wonderful to be involved with a competition that recognises new writers and how damnably tricky it is to write a compelling tale with a limited word count,” says Lauren Beukes. The Cape Town-based columnist is also the author of Moxyland.

The short-story genre is currently enjoying a resurrection, with events such as Short Story Day South, held in June this year, set to become an annual fixture on the local literary calendar.

“I believe each one of us has a story to tell, and I cannot wait to see what talent we are going to unearth. I sincerely hope we will draw out all ‘closet writers’ who feel they have a story within them. And the opportunity to have your work read by such an esteemed judging panel doesn’t come along every day, so this is one of those seize-the-day moments,” says Samantha Page, the editor of O.

Competition details are available in the October issue of O, which goes on sale on Monday, 19 September 2011. For more details, also visit www.oprahmag.co.za

    More About the Competition

O’s first-ever short-story contest is designed to provide a platform for budding writers. Even though there will only be one ultimate winner, we’re encouraging aspirant authors to believe in themselves and try their hand at writing an inspired short story. If you think you can write, go on and enter. The prize? A published piece that will forever have your byline.

O will accept contributions from Wednesday, 14 September 2011, until 5 P.M. on Friday, 14 October 2011. The O magazine team will send a short list of stories to our esteemed judges, who will select the final winner. The winning short story will feature in the February 2012 issue, on sale from 16 January 2012.
