  • Call for Entrants: Vodacom Journalist of the Year (South Africa)

    Deadline: 26 August 2011

There can be no doubt of the vital role a free press has in a democratic society. The impact of journalism in its myriad forms on the South African collective consciousness cannot be overestimated. Joseph Pulitzer once said of the profession: “Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light.” The many journalists recognised by the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards are no doubt those who provide the guiding light to our society.

Vodacom believes it is important to recognise the achievements of these reporters, who strive tirelessly across a multitude of disciplines to ensure that our society remains informed and progressive. By acknowledging the critical role the media plays in our fledgling democracy, Vodacom, through the Journalist of the Year Awards, hopes to reward those reporters who have genuinely made a difference.

From humble beginnings in 2001, these awards have grown to be the highlight for members of the media profession across the entire spectrum of media disciplines and channels. From old-school print journalists to on-camera TV presenters, and from online columnists to social media bloggers, Vodacom believes in rewarding these quiet champions of the truth. Moreover, for close to a decade now these awards have been the launching pad for some of the most promising young talent in the country, boosting their careers and encouraging them to further hone their craft.

Vodacom and the journalists attending these awards have one major thing in common: both are focused on connecting the nation by providing access to information. And just as journalists evolve towards utilising new forms of technology to deliver their message, so Vodacom, too, remains at the cutting edge of ICT technology.

Judges for this year’s competition will once again be distinguished and highly respected leaders in their respective fields, who possess both the practical and theoretical expertise necessary to decide on the best candidates for the awards. Submission, adjudication and archiving of entries to the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards are carried out by employing leading technological elements. Furthermore, as a company that is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and delivering a cohesive Green message, Vodacom is this year encouraging journalists to enter online, instead of printing their entries. and having them couriered.

  • Call for Papers: The African Women's Journal (July - December 2011 issue)

    Deadline: 31 July 2011

As part of contributing to the African Women’s Decade (2010-2020) through provision of information on the themes of the Decade, the African Women’s Journal for July-December 2011 will focus on the theme: Women’s Education and Training in Africa.

Call for Papers: The African Women's Journal (July-December 2011)

THEME: Promoting Equal Opportunities for Women’s Access to Education and Training in Africa
The Beijing Platform for Action stresses that education is one of the most powerful and effective tool for women’s empowerment in Africa. However, limited access to quality education and training opportunities continues to hinder women’s equal participation in decision making, leadership and also in positively contributing to development in their countries. This is despite the fact that equal access to education is considered one of the fundamental human rights by the United Nations since it adopted the Right to education (Article 26) in 1949. Efforts to attain equal access to education and training for boys and girls; men and women have not yet resulted in gender parity at all levels including in adult education programmes.

As part of contributing to the African Women’s Decade (2010-2020) through provision of information on the themes of the Decade, the African Women’s Journal for July-December 2011 will focus on the theme: Women’s Education and Training in Africa.

The Journal articles will focus on any of the following sub-themes:-

    · Strategies being used to attain equal access to education and training in African countries
    · The untold stories in the African continent: some unique examples of literacy programmes and innovations that are transforming the lives of women, their families, communities and societies
    · The role of adult and continuing education in boosting women’s empowerment and sustainable development in Africa
    · Galvanizing African governments to allocate sufficient resources for and monitor the implementation of educational reforms
    · From policy to practice: Expanding opportunities for women and girls’ education

  • Black Birth Blog Carnival: Call For Submissions

    Deadline: 20 March 2012

There are many blogs, and many bloggers out, there talking birth. Some are bloggers who blog about birth occasionally, while others talk birth regularly. Regardless of the frequency, they blog about the statistics, the interventions and the cesareans. They talk about the good births, the bad births, breastfeeding, the postpartum period and more. They discuss the how comes and the why’s, and there is no shortage of opinions on why you should and why you shouldn’t.

Amidst these many blogs are the few bloggers who might classify themselves Black, Mocha, African- American, Mahogany, Afrikan…. I call them Sista Midwives. Those few os us who in addition to blogging about birth often, and some exclusively, write posts that are written specifically for, about, and from our perspective as Black Women. One might ask…” So is birth really THAT much different for Black Women, when compared to Latina, Asian, or Caucasian?” I say yes, Yes, YES.

Sure the babies physically are born the same way. However… the joys and the pains of birth manifest differently in our lives; the spiritual, psychological, physical, emotional and cultural difference that exist are real and significant. It is just as important to note that as no two women of any ethnic group birth exactly the same, the birth stories and experiences of Black Women nationally and internationally are wide and varied.

In this first Carnival: Birthing While Black…A Historical Perspective, we invite you to submit an article or blog post that incorporates in some way, the history of Black Women giving birth. Write about the images that come to mind when you read the title for this first carnival. Tell us how your birth choices today are affected by your personal historical perspective. How do you think our birthing history affects the birth choices of women in our/your community? What unique bit of history can you share about the historical perspective of Birthing While Black? What gives you special pride when you look back into history and visualize Black Women giving birth? Submit an article or blog about anything you feel will highlight and incorporate our theme Birthing While Black…A Historical Perspective.

    WHAT IS A BLOG CARNIVAL

They give you an opportunity to connect with others and have the potential to increase traffic to your blog. If you do not have a personal blog and want to participate, please emails us ASAP at BlackBirthCarnival{at}gmail{dot}com so that we can find you a host blog for your article submission.

    GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSIONS

We are looking for posts that are well written, informative, thought provoking, and relevant to the theme of the carnival. We prefer that you submit a new, unpublished post for the carnival however, if you feel you have the “perfect post” that has been previously published we will accept it.

Please email your posts to us at BlackBirthCarnival{at}gmail{dot}com no later than Tuesday, March 20th.

Be sure to put March Carnival in the subject line of the email and don’t forget to give us the title of your post. We cannot accept your submission without a title.

You will receive an HTML code with instructions via email no later than March 26th. You will need to place this code in your blog post so that you will link up with all of the other blogs participating in the carnival. For the success of the carnival, it’s important that you add this code. Please do not publish your post until after midnight on the 27th.
