  • Sierra Leone's Aminatta Forna Wins 2011 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize

The winners of the 2011 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize were announced today in Sydney in an exciting climax to this year's final programme. Critically acclaimed international literary titles for Best Book and Best First Book were awarded to:

Best Book Winner – The Memory of Love, Aminatta Forna (Sierra Leone)

The judges praised The Memory of Love for its risk taking, elegance and breadth. A poignant story about friendship, betrayal, obsession and second chances – the novel is an immensely powerful portrayal of human resilience. The judges concluded that The Memory of Love delicately delves into the courageous lives of those haunted by the indelible effects of Sierra Leone’s past and yet amid that loss gives us a sense of hope and optimism for their future. Forna has produced a bold, deeply moving and accomplished novel which confirms her place among the most talented writers in literature today.

Best First Book Winner – A Man Melting, Craig Cliff (New Zealand)

The judges chose this highly entertaining and thought provoking collection of short stories for their ambition, creativity and craftsmanship. Confidently blending ideas that frequently weave outlandish concepts with everyday incidents, the prose is skilfully peppered with social observations that define the world we live in. The eighteen short stories are truly insightful and amplify many of the absurdities around us, reflecting our own expectations, fears and paranoia on the big questions in life. This book is of the moment, and is rightly at home on a global platform. Cliff is a talent to watch and set to take the literary world by storm.

Now in its 25th year and supported by the Macquarie Group Foundation, Commonwealth Writers’ Prize is unique in offering both established and emerging writers the opportunity to showcase their work. The Best Book winner claims £10,000 while the writer of Best First Book wins £5,000.

For the last 25 years the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize has played a key role in unearthing new international literary names, bringing compelling stories of human experience to a wider audience. As highly acclaimed international authors Aminatta Forna and Craig Cliff will follow in the footsteps of some of the biggest names in modern fiction in winning the Prize, including Louis De Bernieres, Andrea Levy, Ian McEwan, and Zadie Smith.

For the fifth consecutive year the Macquarie Group Foundation, one of Australia’s leading philanthropic foundations, is helping to advance one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the world. With Macquarie’s support the prize has grown to reach more people around the world, encouraging wider reading across a range of Commonwealth cultures and rewarding the rising talent that other prizes often overlook.

Aminatta Forna was born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Her first book, The Devil that Danced on the Water, was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize 2003. Her novel Ancestor Stones was winner of the 2008 Hurston Wright Legacy Award, the Literaturpreis in Germany, was nominated for the International IMPAC Award and selected by the Washington Post as one of the most important books of 2006. Aminatta lives in London.

Craig Cliff was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand. A graduate of Victoria University’s MA in creative writing, his short stories and poetry have been published in New Zealand and Australia. His short story 'Another Language' won the novice section of the 2007 BNZ Katherine Mansfield Awards. Craig lives in Wellington, New Zealand.

Commenting on the winning announcement, Danny Sriskandarajah Interim Director of the Commonwealth Foundation, said:

“I am delighted to congratulate, the winners of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize 2011. In its 25th year, the Prize embodies the Commonwealth at its best. It unearths the best writing from across 54 countries, promoting dialogue and understanding on an international scale.”

Richard Sheppard, Chairman of the Macquarie Group Foundation, the supporter of the Prize, added:

"The Macquarie Group Foundation is delighted that two such diverse writers have won this year's Commonwealth Writers' Prize. For the last 25 years, the Prize has helped to bring writers to new global audiences and I'm sure once again that this year's winners will delight and inspire readers and writers around the world."

Nicholas Hasluck, Chair of the judging panel said:

“This year’s winning books demonstrate the irreducible power of the written word at a time of rapid global change and uncertainty. The standard of entries this year has been exceptional, showcasing work with strong insight, spirit and voice introducing readers to unfamiliar worlds.”

    The regional prize winners are:

  • When the Women Took over Book N Gauge (Nigeria)

When the Women Took over Book N Gauge (Nigeria)

It was a seraphic gathering for ‘society of the Quill’ at the Debonair Bookstore on Saturday, August 27th 2011. Pulp Faction Club organized an event tagged Book ‘n’ Guage which hosted some eclectic women writers in Nigeria for a book reading session and networking to the delight of the audience. There was also rendition of songs by promising soul musicians, Aduke and Aramide.

The centre which provided attendees with a book voucher as a means of appreciation for gracing the colourful occasion, were also opportune to peer at the finely coordinated jetsam variety of books at the Debonair Bookstore.

The audience was attentive at the experience proffered by Simidele Dosekun, being the former C.O.O of Kachifo Limited, publisher of Farafina books. We were also mesmerized by the tranquil demeanor of Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo who got us philosophical through her reading from Roses and Bullets. Also graceful in her work was a rather sassy and facially extroverted Lola Shoneyin, then clad in the middle amongst the other female writers was Seye Oke, who was often stage shy, but intellectually composed and admirable in her subtle reading. But we cannot wait for the bursting fictional temerity of Joy Bewaji’s yet-to-be released novel; she dazed us with a little sneak into a book that I, in isolation regard as being satirically cynical and conspicuously unavoidable.

Earlier, an enterprising merry looking lady, carved in a petite figure and wearing freezing dreadlocks declared the reading session open, at the Book ‘n’ Guage event. First, it was Lola Shoneyin who read from her book The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, she displayed her erudite speech composure which was modish, bold and intellectually daring, her ability to interpret the content and intent of some characters in her book through basic melodramatic facial gesture certainly compels one for an inquisitive read back of her novel.

Next was the highly respectable and award winning writer, Professor Akachi Adimora Ezeigbo, her book, Roses and Bullets captured the scourge of an eternal animosity in the mould of Ginika to the failures of our forebears, she was inhumanely (ani)mated. More so, the perverted theme in the Biafrian war by some soldiers, as espoused in ‘Roses and Bullets’ suddenly got majority of the women at the event judgmentally frozen and emotionally defiant, to imagine the ghoulish sexual appetite of the soldiers depicted in the book ‘Roses and Bullets’. And I snapped Lola Shoneyin giving away a seething expression at the thought of the soldier’s debauchery attitude.

In Seye Oke, who has series of published books like A Time to heal, Love’s life and Debbie’s Diary, the growing thematic mindset of some people at the event when she introduced us to a love story in her reading, and that surely pinched our abstract sense of humour to an epistolary love message of a character in her book. However, the bursting excitement from Joy Bewaji’s work in progress transcends the audience on a messianic journey steaming with delightful spasm of fictional sarcasm; her few lines she read from the book sparks off unsavoury gender sensitivity that was expressively sexist for a girl child in a ‘competitive’ economy…

Well, at each interval of the reading session, special songs were performed by some soul divas walking with the grace of a feline artistry; it was Aduke who rendered a song that arouses my sense of feeling for our dear country, Nigeria. But quite particularly, it was Aramide, rendition of a song titled ‘Bolaji’ that got me thinking; the etymology of that song compelled some of the people in attendance to ask the question… ‘What did you do to Bolaji?’ Maybe we can empathize and sympathizes with our lovelorn soul Diva as she poured her soul to those lyrics, but we are extremely convinced beyond measure about one thing, that Aramide’s lyrical clef is absolutely her FORTE…surely she endeared us to her soulful voice with merry eyes all cheering, in such a feminized evening for the lover of the pen fraternity, satisfied, justified and creatively fortified for another evening at Debonair Bookstore.

    FAQs

What is the Sheikh Zayed Book Award?

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award is an independent cultural award. It is presented every year to outstanding Arab writers, intellectuals, publishers as well as young talent whose writings and translations of humanities have enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life.

    Who was Sheikh Zayed?

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the principal architect of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE for over 30 years.

What has the award done to expand its international profile over the past two years and how will this impact nominations for session three?

In 2008, the Award Committee evaluated a total of 512 works from more than 1,200 nominated across the nine award categories and which represent submissions from more than 30 countries. Needless to say we’ve achieved a great deal over the past two years to increase our visibility overseas. In 2008, we exhibited at both the London Book Fair and Book Expo America in Los Angeles and held high profile speaking engagements at both of these events. We saw these milestones as real opportunities to talk internationally about the Sheikh Zayed Book Award and its missions. We very much hope that this heightened international presence will translate into an increased number of nominations for 2009 from a broader pool of talented and creative individuals.

Do you have plans to host or attend any other events in the near future?

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award hosted its very first regional event in Paris at the Arab World Institute in July 2008. This event is themed around ‘recognising creativity’ and addressed how translation can help to build bridges between the French and Arab cultures. The future plans of sheikh zayed book award is to host 6 international events around the world.

Approximately how many people were nominated across the nine book award categories?
If we take 2008 figures as a guideline, the Award Committee evaluated a total of 512 works from more than 750 nominated across the nine award categories and which represent submissions from more than 20 countries.

Who manages and oversees the entire selection process?

The award is supervised by a Higher Committee and an Advisory Council that manage a rigorous award selection process

Who selects the members of the selection committee?

Every year, the Advisory Council appoints a group of distinguished regional and international cultural figures who serve on nine separate selection committees, one for each award category

    Why do judges remain anonymous?

The selection committee members remain anonymous to maintain the independence and integrity of the selection process.

    Do the judges meet?

The category judges independently evaluate the nominations and submit their evaluations against a stringent, quantifiable scoring criterion to ensure the decision is truly reflective of their independent and expert views. The assessment results are then calculated for each category and evaluated by the Supreme Advisory Committee for the award.

Doesn’t this approach inhibit discussion and full vetting of the nominees?

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award judging procedure maximizes independence and consistency throughout the evaluation process. The two-stage structure is designed to ensure that the independent views of the expert judging panel are fully captured in a quantifiable and qualifiable manner while also allowing for collective evaluation by the Supreme Advisory Committee.

Why was the prize for Best Technology in the Field of Culture Award not awarded for two consecutive years?

The Best Technology in the Field of Culture Award was withheld for the second consecutive year because the judging panel felt that none of the entries lived up to the high standards that have been set for this category for driving innovation in digital publishing throughout the Arab World. Some awards have been witheld last year as the works did not meet the high standards of the award.

  • CORA Publishers Forum: the Book at the Age of the Microchip (Nigeria)

    Date: 17 November 2011

    Goethe Institute, City Hall, Lagos

As part of its13th Lagos Book & Art Festival which holds from the 18th till the 20th of November 2011, Committee For Relevant Art (CORA) hereby announces its plans for the 2nd Publishers’ Forum which will hold on the 17th of November as a part of the 13th Lagos Book & Art Festival.

The Publishers’ Forum provides a concentrated space for key publishers in Nigeria to gain critical insight into their current operations within the context of the challenges facing their industry, brainstorm on their findings and identify key steps that can be taken as individual businesses or as a collective to improve their bottom line. At CORA, we picture ourselves as midwives to the different facets of the creative industries in Nigeria, therefore what we hope to achieve through the publisher’s forum is the blossoming of the nation’s book industry.

For this year’s Publisher’s Forum, we have chosen to focus on the theme: THE BOOK IN THE AGE OF THE MICROCHIP in appreciating the vast potential that digital technologies hold for empowering publishers in developing economies like ours to dramatically scale up their businesses.

Within the four hours marked up for the business forum, we intend the participants to add value to their businesses through the intervention of key facilitators, critical feedback on their processes, input on the most challenging areas they have to deal with and useful networking.

The Publishers forum will be followed from 5pm to 6.30pm by a conversation (open to the public) tagged: “WOOING THE MASS MARKET” where two publishers will share from their current work and their future plans, by discussing a selection from their publishing list. This year, we will have two publishers discuss their efforts at publishing literary journals and what mileage the internet afforded them in their efforts. A digital display of past editions of their journals will be presented. The discussions will be brought to a close with a cocktail.

A most apt way to describe the Publishers' Forum is to call it a 'focus group' or a strategy session with key facilitators as guide. The forum is targeted at principals of publishing houses who seek to grow their market and are willing to engage in creative thinking towards identifying strategies that can make this possible for them whether within a collective or through their individual operations. Our expectation is that cogent strategies would emerge from the session which can be immediately implemented or could be built upon in future.

The Lagos Book & Art Festival is a comprehensive, four day programme of events; readings, conversations around books, art and craft displays, kiddies’ art workshops and reading sessions, book exhibitions, live music and dance. It will run from November 18 to 20 at the ground of Freedom Park, 1 Hospital Road, (Old Broad Street Prison site) Lagos Island.

The Publishers’ Forum will hold from 10am – 6.30pm on the 17th of November at the Goethe Institut, City Hall, Lagos Island, a short walk from Freedom Park.

    PROGRAMME:

    9am – 10am Registration

10am – 11am Session 1: Optimizing digital platforms for book editing, design and production.

11am – 12noon Session 2: Optimizing digital platforms for book distribution, marketing and sales.

    12noon – 12:20pm Tea Break

12:20pm – 1.20pm Session 3: The book in the age of the microchip

    1.20pm – 2pm Q&A / interactive session.

    2pm – 3pm Lunch Break

    3pm – 4pm Session 3: E-business opportunities for the publishing industry.

4pm – 5pm General discussion and wrap up.

5pm – 6.30pm WOOING THE MASS MARKET- Discussion between two publishers / cocktail

    Facilitators:

Session 1: Bamidele Sanusi / Best Technogies

Session 2: Kazeem Muritala / Wayne & Malcolm Inc.

    Session 3: Goethe Institute

Session 4: Deji Toye / The LODT

The three facilitators will strive to intervene within the following contexts:

    i. Main issues and challenges
ii. Opportunities presented by digital technologies
    iii. Suggested strategies to adopt

While taking care to address the following key areas of concern for the industry:

    1. Financing Publishing in Nigeria
    2. New Technology and the publishing industry in Nigeria
    3. The reading culture and impact on the publishing business in Nigeria
    4. Book distribution and IP violation in the publishing industry.

Session 1 and Session 2 will explore available options for optimizing digital technologies for the production and distribution of books, Session 3 will expound further on the previous two sessions while Session 4 will take lessons learnt in the preceeding sessions and attempt to evolve a workable business strategy from them for the participating publishing houses. An interactive session will conclude the forum, allowing for some feedback and evaluation, just before the final conversation between two publishers and cocktail. Please contact the undersigned to register for the Publishers’ Forum or for more information on the 13th Lagos Book & Art Festival.

  • Bloody Book Week: Mystery, Mayhem, Murder - Crime Writing Festival (South Africa)

    Date: 25 - 31 July 2011

The Bloody Book Week is Africa’s first crime book festival and runs this week from Monday through to Saturday 30th July. International authors are joining local authors in a range of events from a crime writing tutorial to a whodunit dinner.

Location: It is taking place all over Joburg: From Montecasino to Melville as well as Braamfontein.

From CSI to Dexter, from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to Jeffery Deaver, crime is the subject of writing (fiction and non-fiction), television and movies. It is a big-money genre that is growing rapidly and South Africa is no exception as a crop of local authors take on the big international writers at their own game.

The Bloody Book Week: Mystery. Mayhem. Murder. running from Tuesday 25th – Sunday 31st July 2011.

The brainchild of talkshow host, author and book event promoter, Jenny Crwys-Williams, the first Bloody Book Week features a bestselling international crime writer festival and a selection of some of South Africa’s finest crime writing talent, both fiction and non-fiction.

The festival has had a warm reception from participating publishers, booksellers and authors. Crwys-Williams hopes to extend the reach of The Bloody Book Week to Joburg-based bookclubs to spread the reach of the event across the city. Everyone, she says, is welcome. For the last five years Crwys-Williams has hosted one evening a year where international crime writers (John Connolly, Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, Peter Robinson, Deon Meyer, etc) have spent an evening with local authors from Mike Nicol to Margie Orford. “In many ways, The Bloody Book Week is an extension of those evenings,” she says. “They illustrated how popular crime writing is and how people are fascinated by it.” She adds that with powerful young writers such as Sifiso Mzobe coming onto the scene, it seemed that the time had come to establish a crime book festival on the African continent. “People went mad when US crime author Tess Gerritsen visited South Africa earlier this year, but we don’t hear enough about other countries going mad when our own authors, such as Deon Meyer, visited them. No we will.”

The inaugural Bloody Book Week will feature non-fiction writers such as serial killer profiler Micki Pistorius alongside the award-winning British crime writer Michael Robotham, with a host of other outstanding South African crime novelists.

“The crime book festival will represent a positive image of the South African crime writing industry and eventually will add to tourism in Joburg,” says Crwys-Williams.

Full schedule of events is listed here.

Chuma Nwokolo: Lawyer, writer and the publisher of African Writing magazine. He is author of the poetry collection Memories of Stone, the serial Tales by Conversation, and many novels, including Diaries of a Dead African, the Pulpfaction Club Book of the Month for October. He was writer-in-residence at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Chuma’s writing has been termed as funny yet witty. We have featured him once; for this edition, he will read from his latest collection of short stories, The Ghost of Sanni Abacha.

"The Ghost of Sani Abacha tells the story of a man who climbed to the top of his political career only to become disillusioned about the grandeur of wealth. From these stories, Nwokolo brings to life various issues pertinent to life such as love, betrayal, jealousy, greed, power and pride. He weaves his stories around both the rich and poor, city and village life"--The Debonair Book Blog

Ralph Tathagata was born in Obiohia-Bende, Abia State. Presently, he lives in Lagos. He is largely self-educated: a poet, a writer, a journalist and a former general secretary of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Lagos State.

Endless Roads, his first collection of poems, is a profound portrayal of contemporary Nigeria. It is concerned with the State and resultant mental states. The collection shows an awareness of African, European and North American poetries and deals with its varied subjects through a rich variety of poetical forms. In spirit, Endless Roads is satirical and lyrical, to be savoured with a biting tongue. Seeing human life through a surreal kaleidoscope, these poems possess a visionary, even hallucinatory quality. They discover beauty in strange places, in ways that continuously enrich the imagination.

His words dash straight through the heart of the audience and leaving them with thoughts, little mementos to take home.

  • Invitation to Book N Gauge IX: Nine and Still Counting (Nigeria)

    Date: 25 February 2012

Book N Gauge IX: Nine and Still Counting

Eight editions of Book n Gauge gone; and we’re still counting … The ninth edition is here! Book n Gauge is hosted by PulpFaction Book Club, in collaboration with Debonair Bookstore, Yaba, Lagos, and Wordsmithy Media. Book n Gauge IX: Nine and Still Counting would feature 1 author: El-Nukoya; and 2 performers: Nayo Soul and Razaq Ivori. The title of El-Nukoya’s book, Nine Lives, shares the similarity “9” with the slogan of this ninth reading. It’s definitely more than a coincidence!

Book n Gauge 9: Nine and Still Counting would feature:

    El-Nukoya, Author of Nine Lives

El-Nukoya has written what literary critics describe as “an authentic Nigerian blockbuster” and a “riveting page turner.” The idea to put his thoughts on paper came in 1990 when he moved with his family to a quiet suburban neighbourhood in Lagos, Nigeria. “In my solitude, great rock and rap music lyricists such as Seal, Sting, Bono and Tupac Amaru Shakur brought me companionship. Inspired by their talent, I felt an urge to create something that was universal and timeless. The prevailing socio-political situation in Nigeria provided me with a virile subject. It was six years before I could pause,” El-Nukoya.

El-Nukoya did his first degree in Lagos, and graduate studies in North America. He currently lives and works in Lagos.

    SYNOPSIS OF NINE LIVES

Olupitan Ogunrinu – bright and handsome but of humble pedigree – battles to assert himself within the social segregation of an elite university community. As he struggles with the moral contradiction, corruption and frivolity around him, he resolves not to be a victim in the predatory race to success, even when the immediate battle to belong seems lost.

A brilliant mind and rugged determination keep Olupitan’s aspirations in focus, until distraction comes in the form of Tolani Badmus, a pretty, intelligent lady, born with silver spoon, who falls in love with him against all the odds. Olupitan was soon to compromise his fiery ambition in a perpetual struggle to sustain his fragile, unnatural romance; and the relationship blossoms, or so it seems, until a revelation of deceit leads to heartbreak, near-failure and desperation. As Olupitan wallows in malaise; cultism beckons … The consequences are devastating.

Olupitan finds escape in America; but also squalor, loss of dignity and, eventually, illicit wealth. Wealth came with new ambitions, a quest for vengeance and a new destination, Lagos. Death, however, is an unintended factor in this game, prowling him as he wades through the murky waters of vanity, hatred and self-destruction

Nine Lives captures the historical culture of the Nigerian people and the new culture as evolved through decades of social hardship, corruption and misrule.

    BLURBS

“A totally riveting page-turner, El~Nukoya weaves a moral tale and takes you on a journey across decades of Nigerian culture.”
    – Joy Joses, National Magazine, UK

“That rare thing; an authentic Nigerian blockbuster.”
    – Adewale Maja-Pearce, writer and editor

“A thrilling saga about settling scores. Olupitan Ogunrinu, moved by discrimination and mockery, sets out to make good, in defiance of society’s rigid boundaries, making friends and foes on his journey. Bad judgment and grave miscalculations narrow his choices… a cornered soul in search of an outlet, he turns bad, but recovers in time to find victory - by all means - and set himself on a new path to vengeance. An episode on the human quest for triumph, the intertwining lives, loves and hates make for a macabre tale. A hip and contemporary yarn, this novel grips you from the very first and doesn’t let up until the last revelatory page.”
    – Uzor Maxim Uzoatu, writer and poet

“A powerful story! El~Nukoya is a very descriptive writer and I found myself visualising the scenes – especially the ones in Nigeria.”
    – Gordon Barnhart, USASK, Canada

“A great piece of literary work…assuredly the pioneer of yet greater works to come. Surprisingly exciting and captivating.”
    – Lakunle Lijadu, New York lawyer

    “A masterpiece!”
    – Charles Iyoha, publisher, Futureline magazine

    PERFORMING

Nayo Soul >>>> Soul/Jazz singing sensation. 'NΑYÒ Soul, the lawyer, vocalist and songwriter, born Odunαyo Ayorinde, is a natural beauty, blessed with a voice that is part angel and part siren. The 25-year-old prodigy might well be the new face of soul music in Nigeria.

NΑYÒ started performing live as a teenager at age 19, which soon grew to regular performances. She has recorded three songs – Unconditional Love, Destiny Train and Rhythm of the Sound. Her music is earthy, light, melodic, joyful, and almost airborne. Although she stumbled on soul/jazz music by accident, she has however become addicted to the voice, instrumentation and arrangement of the music. Some of her influences include: Janelle Monae, Corrine Bailey Rae, Adele Adkins, India Arie, Lauryn Hill, Chrisette Michele, Jill Scott, Pink and newly discovered, Esperanza Spalding.

Razaq Ivori >>>> Spoken Word Artiste. He is a prolific writer whose career was launched by writing as “a ghost pen”, in the form of biographies, for the rich and famous. Razaq Ivori graduated from Ahmadu Bello University and the Institute of Journalism. He has two unpublished works in the offing: The Sperm, a Sci-Fi African drama piece and The Adventures of Illinick. He longs to bring back the art of the quintessential town crier poetic semantics which he dubs “narrative news”—a system where actual news content is infused in free flowing prose rendition like the Yoruba “ewi”, though delivered in English yet not without the characteristic melodic chant of the past. For six months, Ivori premiered this art at the Bogobiri House, ikoyi, where some said the uproar it generated prompted the proprietors to establish a full scale stage house next door for performance poetry.

  • Call for Submissions: For Colored Boys (Magnus Books)

    Deadline: 20 July 2011

From May 20 until July 20, we will accept essays and other writings to include in For Colored Boys. We are looking for inspirational stories centered around any one of the following four major themes: faith, family, love and work. Submissions should be between 1000 and 5000 words. Some of the essays published in the finished book will be long and some will be short. Send your submission to info@4coloredboys.com. Please include your name, email address, phone number, brief 1-paragraph bio and a jpeg photo with your submission.

Unlike traditional anthologies which tend to use established writers, we also want to tell the stories of real people (ordinary and extraordinary) who have dealt with, or are still dealing with, adversity in their lives. Of course we intend to include essays from gifted writers, published authors and well known public figures who have overcome obstacles. But we are also looking for college students, suicide survivors, and those who have faced bullying or harassment in their lives. It doesn't matter if you call yourself "same-gender-loving," "down low," "gay," "queer," or none of the above. We're not interested in labels. We are interested in well-told stories that will educate, entertain or inspire others.

Ideally, we would like to include the voices of Latinos, Asian-Americans and other people of color in this book. And we expect to include the voices of those who are straight, bisexual, transgender or questioning, so long as the stories are relevant to the purpose and the themes of the book.

Finally, we don't expect every story to finish with a happy ending. That's not the way life works. Nor do we expect every essay to deal with suicide, harassment or tragedy. We want this to be a balanced but inspirational book about real life. Your voice and your story are critical to make that happen.

The book will be published in March/April 2012.

Title: For Colored Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Still Not Enough (A collection of writings on living life, confronting obstacles and believing in yourself)

    Editor: Keith Boykin

    Publisher: Magnus Books

    Background:

In 1974, playwright Ntozake Shange published a choreopoem called For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. The book/play/poetry would go on to inspire legions of women for decades and would later become the subject and title of a hugely popular movie in the fall of 2010. While the film was selling out movie theaters, young black gay men were literally committing suicide in the silence of their own communities. It was around that time when Keith Boykin, a New York Times bestselling author, and Magnus Books publisher Don Weise first discussed the possibility of working together on a book in response to the outbreak of suicides among young men of color.

In the same time period, a young Rutgers University student named Tyler Clementi took his own life after a roommate secretly videotaped him in an intimate setting with another young man. In response, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry to inspire young people facing harassment. Their message, It Gets Better, turned into a popular movement, inspiring thousands of user-created videos on the Internet. Savage's project targeted people of all races, backgrounds and colors, but Boykin and Weise wanted to create something special "for colored boys." When they decided to create a new book, the title was obvious: For Colored Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Still Not Enough. It was almost the same title author E. Lynn Harris had once considered for his memoir. The new book responds to the crisis of youth development and suicide in the black community, and more specifically among young gay men of color.
