The call for 2012 submissions is now open. The deadline for receipt of submissions is midnight (London time) 31st May 2012.

Each year a call for submissions is made, usually in the first quarter, and a deadline set for receiving entries. An online entry form is provided on this website during the submission period and details for postal entries are also given.

Each entrant is invited to submit up to three articles published between the previous year’s deadline and the latest deadline in any type of print-based media, including newspapers and magazines, or in established online publications. Blogs and personal websites are not eligible.

    THERE ARE TWO CATEGORIES:

The stories can be about conflict, human rights, cross-border issues, corruption, or any other controversial matter in a particular country or region. Each submission must demonstrate professionalism, meet international journalistic standards and provide evidence that courage and determination were required in covering the story.

Entrants must complete the entry form (either an online version or a PDF for printing and posting) and supply supporting documentation such as a CV or resumé about their education and journalistic experience, a passport-type photo and an English translation if their entry has been published in another language. A statement about what was involved in getting the story is also required.

Incomplete submissions are liable to disqualification.

We do not accept any entries made outside the submission call period.

Because of problems with scanned entries and failed links in past years we now require that each article must be provided as a text file - MS Word (.doc or .docx) or similar text format (.rtf), or a PDF of a text file.

You may supply a URL link to your article(s), or a scan (as a PDF or JPG file) as supporting evidence of the publication context, but your entry will be disqualified if you have not submitted the required text file too.

  • Call for Submissions: Adanna Journal Issue 4

    Deadline: 30 April 2012

    WHY ADANNA?

Adanna, a name of Nigerian origin, pronounced a-DAN-a, is defined as “her father’s daughter.” This literary journal is titled Adanna because women over the centuries have been defined by men in politics, through marriage, and, most importantly, by the men who fathered them. Today women are still bound by complex roles in society, often needing to wear more than one hat or sacrifice one role so another may flourish.

While this journal is dedicated to women, it is not exclusive, and it welcomes our counterparts and their thoughts about women today. Submissions to Adanna must reflect women’s issues or topics, celebrate womanhood, and shout out in passion.

    CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Send submissions as a single file attachment to adannajournal@yahoo.com
Adanna accepts poetry, short stories, short plays, essays, book reviews and interviews (please query first on book reviews and interviews), and will consider artwork for cover only. Adanna welcomes both National and International submissions in English.

    • Please submit only unpublished pieces.
    • For poetry submissions, please send no more than 6 poems at a time.
    • Please limit prose works to a maximum of 2000 words, no more than one piece in a submission.
    • Simultaneous submissions accepted.
    • Please notify us as soon as possible of any accepted work.
    • Submit in one file as a single document, Word or rtf. No pdf files, please.
    • Include contact information on your document and a 3-4 line bio.
    • Please note that there is a response time of 4-12 weeks.

Adanna is a perfect bound print book publication. All contributors receive a complimentary copy. The period for Issue 2 is January 31-April 30, 2012.

    ABOUT THE FEATURED POETS PAGE

Adanna's "Featured Poets Page" focuses on thematic issues relating to women in the same spirit as our annual print issue.

Our next quarter will begin April 15 and will focus on the topic of "Father/Daughter Relationships." Please submit unpublished work only (including both print and online publications in any form). Send up to three poems to adannafeaturedpoetpage@yahoo.com and include in your subject line "Featured Poets Page." The deadline for the next submission period is April 13th. Due to the large volume of submissions Adanna will respond to Acceptances Only for the on-line featured page. The periods will run: 1/15-4/15; 4/15-7/15; 7/15-10/15; 10/15-1/15. Women in REDzine does accept simultaneous submissions, however, in the event that the work is accepted for publication elsewhere, please do us the courtesy of informing us promptly. Only previously unpublished, wholly ORIGINAL works will be considered for publication.

Our reading period is currently open. Cover letters should include a word count and indicate whether the submission is fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.

Note: While other journals and magazines encourage writers to read their back issues to get a sense of what it is that they are looking for, and what they like to publish, we at Women in REDzine encourage you to read our back issues to get a feel of some of what we don't want; the previous aesthetic, while wonderful, is completely different from the one that we are now exploring and does not reflect the direction that we wish to go in...besides, it's never good to repeat yourself. We strive to be continually evolving and improving the magazine!

    Instructions for prose submissions...

Please submit only one story, or essay, at a time. Multiple submissions may be overlooked/discarded. Include your full name, telephone number and email address in your cover letter, or the body of your email. Writing must be 4000 words, or less.

If you have a piece exceeding 4000 words, it may be submitted for publication on the website, unfortunately, we would not have sufficient space in our print issues to publish such a lengthy piece. We do our best to respond within four-six weeks, however, in some cases this period may be longer. If you have not received a response from us within two months, we will be happy to respond to your e-mail inquiries. We do ask that you please wait until you hear back from us before submitting new work for consideration.

    Instructions for poetry submissions...

Please submit three poems, or less, per submission at a time. Multiple submissions may be overlooked/discarded. Include your full name, telephone number and email address in your cover letter, or the body of your email. The same maximum length of 4000 words still applies to poetry submissions.

If you have not received a response from us within two months, we will be happy to respond to your e-mail inquiries. We do ask that you please wait until you hear back from us before submitting new work for consideration.

  • Call for Submissions - Intersections: Woman, Artist, Muslim (anthology)

    Deadline: 31 March 2012

    Intersections: Woman, Artist, Muslim

Ruminations on Being, Creating, and Believing

This is a call for submissions for a new project, the anthology Artist Intersections: Woman, Artist, Muslim. As you well know art and all its various forms, such as poetry, performance, film, illustration, fashion, are often misunderstood and even demonized in the greater Muslim community. The intent of this project is to reflect on the experiences of creative/creating Muslimahs to (insha Allah) dispel some of these myths as well as to inspire others to maximize their God-given talents and the blessings available through doing so.

As this project hopes to reveal (notice we didn’t say “unveil”!) a wide scope of the artists and artistic happenings, both visual and literary, across the ummah, we are open to accepting a diverse array of writing styles, including and by no means limited to essays, dialogues, creative non-fiction writing and poetry that is directly relevant to the subject matter. We would also like to include some inspiring, entertaining and/or insightful interviews of artsy sisters. You are welcome to put together an interview for submittal, contact us for suggestions of sisters of interest, or run by us ideas of potential interviewees.

Works which include excerpts from Quran, hadith, and other Muslim Maxims are of course welcomed in this project, however if your style or preference does not include such, your work is also welcome as we strive for inclusion of a diverse representation of believers, respecting the individuality in each Muslim point of view. This is not an anthology of “Islamic Art,” rather it is an anthology of Muslim Women Artists. In the spirit of inclusivity we ask that writers consider their readers and therefore cannot accept any work which includes vulgarity or explicit depictions of sex. Submissions from Sisters of Color are especially appreciated.

We would love to hear about issues related to being a Muslim woman artist, such as:

    • Internal and external struggles with accepting yourself as a artist
    • Rectifying your culture, art and religion
    • Epiphany-like moments related to being an artist
    • Art and dawah
    • Art as ibadah
    • Art as rizk: Being a working (as in selling) artist
    • Accepting yourself as being a creative being or non-working (as in selling) artist
    • Creativity and your community
    • Reflections on historical Muslim arts and artists which inspire you
    • Anything else related to your being an artist, a woman and a Muslim

    Submission Guideline Details:
    • Email all submissions both as .doc and pasted in the content of your email to intersectionsanthology@gmail.com
    • Maximum 5,000 words
    • Include a 2-3 sentence biography
    • If you have one, include website or blog url

Submissions due March 1st, 2012 PLEASE NOTE THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MARCH 31, 2012

Information about compensation, copy rights and similar will not be available until a publisher has been secured, minimally each accepted entry will receive a copy of the anthology.

Please help spread the word! Share the submission guidelines for Intersections: Woman, Artist, Muslim on your blog, website, social networks and with all of your creative sisters.

  • An Opportunity to Present Your Ideas in Bari, Italy - Call for Papers: 8 Ideas to Change the World (eligible: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt)

    Deadline: 30 June 2012

Over the last few years, ANPAS, also through the support of important European networks like Samaritan International (SAMI) and the European Center for Volunteering (CEV), has developed a particular attention to European policies in the belief that our country can be a bridge to the countries of the Mediterranean. Last year we also acceded to the Mediterranean Autonomous Network for Youth (MANY), a network of youth in the Mediterranean that wants to promote the meeting and sharing of knowledge between youth belonging to different social and cultural groups, affirming a culture of learning. ANPAS doesn’t want volunteers to remain indifferent to the grand phenomenon that the countries bordering the mare nostrum are experiencing, which have appealed to our affluent society with movements of people (migration) and socio-political upheavals (the Arab Spring). So then? So we would like to see what’s in store beyond our shores, learn new ideas, and build relationships in the Mediterranean. Through this Call for Papers, we invite the youth of society, citizens 32 years of age and younger, to share ideas to better the world, to construct a more just and united society, for the development of a culture of solidarity, for the protection of the environment and of common goods.

Do you have an idea to change the world? Share it with us!

We have chosen the National Meeting of Solidarity that will be held in Puglia, a natural bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean, where 8 youth will present their projects: 8 ideas to change the world, in particular in the area of relations between Italy and the people of the Mediterranean, presented by youth of these countries.

    HOW IT WORKS

Among all the ideas received by the 30th of June 2012, only 8 will be selected, that can be presented on the occasion of the International Conference of Youth of the Euromediterranean that will be held in Bari, Saturday the 29th of September 2012.

Therefore, if your idea convinces us, you will fly to Bari and have 10 minutes to present your idea, in the most attractive mode. Are you ready?

    WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

The projects can be presented by youth under age 32, who can be residents in Italy or in these countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Malta, Libya, Egypt, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia.

We would also like to hear the ideas of immigrants that live in Italy but come from these countries: the true bridge of the Mediterranean!

    CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

To those who will be selected, you will be given the opportunity to participate in Bari at the entire National Meeting of Solidarity that will be held from Thursday the 27th of September to Sunday the 30th of September. ANPAS will pay the costs relative to accommodation, meals, and transfers to the headquarters of the Meeting. To promote better organization of the day, participants will make sure to specify the necessary logistics for transfers, so that we can make arrangements.

Media professionals in print, broadcast, radio and online fora from Africa, India, China and Brazil are encouraged to apply before the deadline of 30 March 2012 Introduction While the strategic and rhetorical importance of the African Union has been recognized in Africa and by its foreign partners, the media has had a potentially important role to play in reporting on developments at the African Union and the impact and role of the organisation. Indeed, civil society and African citizens have relied on media reports to be informed of developments within the organisation, while also playing a large role in developing perceptions around the work of the organisation, implications for individual African countries, and the activities and voices of those individual countries in debating challenges at the continental level. In addition, the AU has come to play a potentially important role in bilateral relations between the African continent and emerging actors such as India and China-‐ in particular through the India-‐Africa Forum Summit and Forum on China-‐Africa Coooperation (FOCAC).

Fahamu’s Emerging Powers in Africa Initiative is therefore pleased to announce a call for applications for its journalist visit to the African Union Summit. Five successful applicants will be chosen to participate in the visit that aims to:

-‐increase reporting amongst foreign media of the role of the African Union in the development of political ties between Africa and their home countries

-‐to develop increased understanding amongst journalists of the work of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in engaging with the AU, as well as their perspectives and response to the outcomes of the Summit Call for Applications Media professionals in print, broadcast, radio and online fora from Africa, India, China and Brazil are encouraged to apply.

  • Open Call for Manuscripts from African-American Women Writers: J. Burrage Publications

    J. Burrage Publications, LLC has announced an open call for new writers to submit manuscripts within multiple genres. JBP specializes in new authors, with a focus on helping African-American women with stories to tell get their manuscript published and in the hands of readers around the world.

JBP is seeking new writers, though established writers are also welcome to submit manuscripts. Currently, JBP is accepting submissions in the following genres:

    * Fiction (general, contemporary and urban)
    * Poetry
    * Science Fiction
    * Mystery (general, contemporary and urban)

Urban and contemporary fiction are the most heavily sought submission types, and writers are asked only to submit samples of their manuscript (not full manuscripts). The publisher offers full submission guidelines at http://www.jbpublications.com/becoming_a_jbp_author/submission_guidelines.

JBP is a new publishing house that began accepting new authors in 2011, and their goal of “taking over the industry, one book at a time,” is very apparent. While the company might be new, they have published several critically acclaimed novels, including Caught Up, a street thriller, and Secrets Revealed, a sci-fi thriller. One factor that sets JBP apart from other publishers is their mission – to find unknown writers with powerful, compelling stories to tell and build their reputations. With a significant focus on attracting and promoting minority female authors, the publisher offers something that few others can.

The “3-B Dimension” experience is another innovative development here. This is an entirely new reading experience, designed to hook readers and leave them wanting more – creating the most unique experience the reader has ever known. Lesser-known writers, undiscovered talents and new authors will help build the 3-B Dimension through compelling stories unlike anything readers have read previously, creating a synergistic platform for all authors published through JBP.

    How to Submit Your Manuscript

We highly suggest that you contact us at info@jbpublications.com to get more information prior to submitting a sample to us.

When submitting your book for consideration, DO NOT send the entire manuscript. Send the first three chapters, along with the written synopsis on what the book is about. Include your name, email address, and bio with your submission. Telephone number is helpful but not required. The sample and synopsis can be in Word or PDF format. All samples and manuscripts must be in 12-point font, Times New Roman type font, and double-spaced with 1 inch margins all around. Do not send a sample if you are not finished writing your manuscript. Incomplete manuscripts will not be considered.

Once your book has been considered, we will email you to inform you if it has been accepted for publishing. If accepted, we will then send you a contract and ask you to send the complete manuscript. This contract will explain the terms and conditions. You can either scan or fax the signed contract to us or you can mail it to the mailing address we will provide in the email. All complete manuscripts MUST be emailed in Word format. From there, the publishing process will begin.

If your book is not accepted, we will inform you on the reasons. This doesn’t necessarily means that your book is not worth publishing; it simply means that it is not what we are looking for at this time. You can always improve your manuscript and resubmit it at a later date.

Send your samples and completed manuscripts to submissions@jbpublications.com. Do not send samples or full manuscripts as part of the email (copying and pasting the sample in the body of the email). Send them as attachments to the email.

You can also mail samples to:

    J. Burrage Publications, LLC
    Attn: Submissions
    P. O. Box 1949
    Mesilla Park, NM 88047

All mailed submissions must follow the same format as if it was emailed. No handwritten submissions will be accepted and they must be bound. We do not return submissions, so do not send your only copy.

Any submission not following these guidelines will automatically be rejected.

Please allow 8 to 10 weeks for us to review your sample.
