  • The Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival (Third Edition) Opens Today

    On the wave of the “Arab Spring”, synonym of transformation and renewal, Baad El Bahr Cultural Association (BEBA) is launching the third edition of the Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival, an event that has proven itself a tangible demonstration of the possibility of constructive dialogue between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

    Baad El Bahr, founded as a nonprofit in 2008 (www.baadelbahr.org), is a cultural association based in Cairo and created by individuals from diverse national and cultural backgrounds, involved for years in various branches of Egypt's cultural life. The association offers to the public workshops, conferences, exhibitions and long term activities such as the translation and publication of literary texts and the ongoing Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival, an annual appointment with different themes.

    “Literature and humor” was the theme of the festival first edition (5-12 May 2010). It was co-sponsored by the Delegation of the European Community in Egypt. “Literature and humor” gave a particular emphasis to Arabic and romance languages. Guests came from Italy, France, Spain, Egypt, Lebanon and Algeria.

    “Literature and the city” was the theme of the second edition (21-25 May 2011). Guests were, for the most part, contemporary authors whose works reflect the often radical changes that have taken place in cities in the last twenty years. The festival hosted writers from Italy and Egypt who participated in round table discussion.

    The 2012 edition of the festival is entitled “Literature and Body” and will take place in Cairo from the 17thto the 21st May 2012.

    The festival this year explores the long-standing but inexhaustible relationship between "literature and the body."

    The body has been present through centuries of literature as an object of constant attention, undergoing continuous changes, but without losing its freshness and its ability to amaze us.

    To paraphrase the title of a collection of short stories by Raymond Carver, what is it we talk about when we talk about the body, in our modern times?

    There is probably no vision more different, from one side to the other of the Mediterranean, from country to country, than that of the body. So it will be more interesting than ever this year to hear the voices from different cultural backgrounds, incited in different ways to probe themselves and each other.

    The theatrical reading form seems to us particularly suitable for this edition, where the text is elevated by the physicality of the “rap-rep”. There will also be conferences for deeper reflection, face-to-face or virtual encounters between authors, visual support in the form of two major exhibitions dedicated to the body and films and documentaries, as well as interactive seminars and book presentations. All of these, we hope, will make for discussion that is as vibrant and vital as the body itself.

    Most of the guests are contemporary authors from the Mediterranean basin such has the French philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky and the Egyptian philosopher Anwar Moghith, the Lebanese director Jocelyne Saab, the Italian authors Simonetta Agnello Hornby and Viola Di Grado, the actress Fernanda Calati, Alessandro Golinelli, the Spanish writer Maria Laura Espido Freire and more.

    The festival events will take place in different venues in Cairo in partnership with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Institut Français, Instituto Cervantes, Mashrabia Gallery, British Council, Goethe Institut, Alitalia and Rising Stars.

  • Egyptian International Short Story Competition: Resurrection of Ancient Egypt (worldwide)

    Literature has always been a method of communication, whether between the author and the self, the author and the reader, or a book discussion between several readers. These means of communication are outstanding that they can be fulfilled by communicating with the past, and creating some sort of telepathy.

    The aim of the Forgotten Writers Foundation is to empower the forgotten literature of some cultures, and thus it issued its first short-story competition, which is about Resurrection of Ancient Egypt.

    The competition is about writing fictional short-stories at the era of Ancient Egypt, whereas the stories must not be very much related to historical events. It is open to anyone, giving enough space for the writer to become creative and write about any genre, with any style.

    The winning stories will be gathered and published in one book. The aim of this competition, apart from shedding the light on the mysterious culture of Pharos, is to perform an analysis on how Egyptians and non-Egyptians define and view one of the oldest cultures on Earth, and with this analysis we should excavate guidance to our contemporary world.

    Eligibility and Competition Guidelines:

    1- The competition is open to Egyptians and Non-Egyptians.
    2- Any age group and gender.
    3- Fluent English.
    4- Originally written in English and not translated through another party.
    5- Unpublished work.
    6- Maximum 10,000 words.
    7- It is possible to use illustrations as figures, pictures and drawings if you are a painter.
    8- It is possible to include poetry within your story.
    9- It is NOT possible to use quotes from other writers.
    10- You are free to choose any genre of horror, fantasy, politics, romance, or any other one.
    11- You are free to use any kind of style and narration.
    12- All stories are sent via email.
    13- Word Document: Font must be Times New Roman, 12, Margins Justified and pages numbered.
    14- There must be a title for the story, centered in the middle of the page, bold, and size 12.

    For centuries, the Mediterranean Sea has both divided and joined the many disparate nations, cultures, language groups and artistic traditions which flourished in the Mediterranean Basin: the Maghreb, Iberia, Southern Europe, the Balkans, the Levant and Egypt. As a dividing line and barrier to inter-cultural exchange, it has allowed each of these regions and their many cultures to develop unique artistic traditions. As the major feature binding these diverse cultures together, however, it has also facilitated inter-cultural exchange. What happens, then, when these traditions travel, meet and merge with each other? How does the host country adopt and adapt the ideas and aesthetics coming from abroad to its own native tradition?

    This volume will look at such pan-Mediterranean artistic exchange (in literature as well as film, painting, music, photography, etc.) produced during or about the Modernist period, roughly the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. We welcome papers addressing any aspect of Modernist and avante-garde literature and art on four related themes: first, papers which describe the interaction of two or more Mediterranean artistic traditions (international Futurism, for example, or the reception of French Surrealism in Algeria); second, two or more Mediterranean cultures (Alexandria’s Jewish community or relations between Greeks and Turks in Cyprus); third, depictions of the Mediterranean itself during the period (in, for example, Lawrence Durrell’s Bitter Lemons of Cyprus or Henry Miller’s Colossus of Maroussi); or, fourth, the myriad forms of Modernist and avante-garde art which emerged from a single location (such as Cavafy, Marinetti, Ungaretti and Durrell in Alexandria).   • The 2012 Palestine Festival of Literature Opens May 5th in Gaza

    Date: 5 - 9 May 2012 (Gaza), 11 May 2012 (Cairo)

    The Festival will take place in Gaza from May 5th to May 9th, with an event in Ramallah on May 5th and a reprise event in Cairo on May 11th.

    It has been a longstanding aim of the festival to travel to Gaza. Since it started in 2008 PalFest has taken the form of a travelling festival – moving to audiences constrained and divided by Israel’s military occupation, establishing creative links between Palestine and the rest of the world and pitting the power of culture against the culture of power.

    PalFest has tried several times in the past to reach Gaza from the Occupied Palestinian Territories but has never been able to because of the restrictions put in place by the Israeli Occupation. Gaza has been under siege and isolated from the rest of the world since 2007.
    This May, PalFest 2012 will bring a group of writers, educators and artists through the Rafah crossing from Egypt to perform free public events, run workshops with students of varying ages and meet civil society leaders in Gaza.

    PalFest has endorsed the 2004 Palestinian call for the academic and cultural boycott of Israel. PalFest 2012 stands against the siege of Gaza; it is committed to re-invigorating cultural ties between Arab countries, ties that have been eroded for too long. The Festival will be bringing writers and artists from across the Arab world and beyond.

    While the Festival’s primary activities will be taking place in Gaza, PalFest works to retain its active presence in the West Bank. British authors Rachel Holmes and Bee Rowlatt will lead extended creative writing workshops in Birzeit with the Palestine Writing Workshop. They will also be joining Maya Abu el-Hayat, Abd al-Rahim al-Sheikh and Imad Sayrafi on stage at the Sakakini Centre on May 5th. A one-day children’s literature festival will be held during the Festival, with plans for a larger children’s event in the summer.

    Beyond the Festival dates PalFest continues its educational programme through its sister organization the Palestine Writing Workshop, whose activities include regular book clubs, creative writing classes and the creation and maintenance of a library.

    PalFest will be launching a new, bi-lingual website this week. Developed with the support of the UK Arts Council, the site will be profiling new literary talent from across Palestine and the diaspora as well as developing an online space for critical feedback between young writers and more established authors.

    “The Forgotten Writers” foundation was created after the Egyptian revolution with a clear Mission Statement to reveal the depth of Egyptian Literature to the rest of the world. This would be done by writing about cultural and social topics that are original and novel. The first project this foundation offered was a book of short stories about the revolution by twelve Egyptian residents.

    The Foundation issued its first short story competition with the title of “Resurrection of Ancient Egypt” and it has witnessed so far a wide range of attraction from the media and people.
    “Women’s Domination” is the second competition offered by the Forgotten Writers Foundation. The theme is about writing stories that reveal the power of women in terms of direct and metaphorical gestures and lines.

    The competition is open to all women and men who are feminists and anti-feminists, and the aim of it is to measure how both sexes perceive women’s domination.

    I do not personally believe in setting rules in writing and guidelines. A writer is a mini-creator who has the absolute freedom in writing whatever, and however. This competition is a little different, so the guidelines set below are not to limit the creativity of the writer, but only to direct it to the main goal of this competition.

    Eligibility:

    1- The competition is open for Egyptians and Non-Egyptians.
    2- Applicable for age of sixteen and above.
    3- Eligible for both; females and males.
    4- Fluent English.
    5- Originally written in English and not translated through another party.
    6- Unpublished work.

    General Competition Guidelines:

    1- Maximum 3,000 words.
    2- You (Male or Female) are the first narrator, it is not allowed for a man for instance to choose to become a first narrator for the woman protagonist or vice versa.
    3- There must be a title for the story.

    5- It is possible to include your own poetry within your story.
    6- It is NOT possible to use quotes from other writers.

    3- Writing about the man’s internal feelings is NOT allowed, however anticipation is highly recommended, for example:

    · You are NOT allowed to say this: (He felt weak, lustful, the chemistry…etc.)

    Conclusion:

    Notice that this book will be a cocktail of different ideas. It is more of using the suitable ratios of stories rather than it is a competition. There might be outstanding stories that might not find a place in the book. But, we will try our best to make all the good stories fit, even if it will be possible to make two separate books. So, just write and know that this competition is not measuring your level, but consider it as a workshop and a chance to do something different, challenge yourself and get to know new intellectual people.

    This British School is looking for an English Literature and Language teacher to KS5. The school is a lovely school with approximately 300 children and the school follows IGCSE and A level.     1- The winning stories will be chosen on the degree of creativity and the novelty of the idea. Strange and unusual ideas are strongly recommended.

    5- The ending of the story and how powerful it is.
    6- There will be no judging on grammar because it will be unjust since there are those who have English as a first language and those who have it as a second language. We will do the editing if needed for you, but try to introduce your piece as decent as possible.

    CONCLUSION:

    Notice that this book will be a cocktail of different ideas. It is more of using the suitable ratios of stories rather than it is a competition.     Job Role:

    Key tasks:
