  • Free Webinar: Sales Strategies for Freelance Business Journalists

    Date: 16 - 18 August 2011

Beyond writing, reporting and editing chops, thriving financially outside of a traditional newsroom requires one major skill that most journalists lack: salesmanship. Commercial considerations make many journalists squeamish because they are taught that their job is to inform the citizenry, tell compelling stories and bring truth to light. But like it or not, all of these goals require money.

In this free Webinar, “Sales Strategies for Freelance Business Journalists,” participants will learn simple things they can immediately incorporate into their daily work to help them identify great writing clients, win more assignments and earn a healthy living. You can attend a daily, hourlong, interactive session at either noon or 4 p.m. EDT on Aug. 16-18 and noon EDT on Aug. 19. To register for this free training, click here.

Attendees will learn how to broaden their view of available opportunities, present themselves and their story ideas in a compelling fashion, and bolster their freelance-writing income. Different surveys have pegged freelance business journalists’ annual income at $25,000 to $40,000 a year. Salesmanship is the key weakness that keeps many capable journalists from thriving outside of the newsroom, according to your instructor for this Webinar, Maya Payne Smart, freelance business journalist and founder of WritingCoach.com.

An informal survey in fall 2010 of 67 freelance business journalists by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers found that nearly three out of four freelancers said they are making less now than when they were employed full-time by one media outlet. Image by Flickr user sskennel.

    WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

    * Who is looking for freelance business journalists
    * How to decide whom you want to work with
    * How to consistently turn leads into clients

    AGENDA

Check out these specific examples of how real freelancers have used 20 different tools (business cards, advertising, PR, direct mail, networking, trade shows, speaking, joint ventures, ezines, link exchanges, Google Ad Words, search engine optimization, affiliate programs, e-mail marketing, article marketing, blogging, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) to reach new clients.

Aug. 18: Closing the Sale — How do you get from a lead to a prospect to a customer to a client? How do you win repeat business? What are the best electronic options for storing and organizing prospect, customer and client data? How can you evaluate your sales and marketing efforts and improve results?

Aug. 19: Ask the Hiring Editors — Get your questions answered in an online panel discussion with editors and others who hire freelance journalists. Find out how to establish and maintain good client relationships.

    YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Maya Payne Smart

After spending six years in the trenches as a freelance business journalist, Maya Payne Smart founded WritingCoach.com to help journalists, authors and other writers build profitable businesses. Her mission is to provide the tools, information and advice that freelancers need to thrive, from marketing basics to advanced business-building strategies. Smart teaches entrepreneurial journalism courses for the Society of Professional Journalists, the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism and other organizations for wordsmiths. With Poynter.org careers columnist Joe Grimm, she taught the Reynolds Center’s highly successful “How to Be an Entrepreneur as a Business Journalist” Webinars in 2009 and 2010. She serves on the boards of the Society of American Business Editors & Writers and James River Writers. She holds degrees from Harvard University and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

“Business journalists are poised to succeed as freelancers because they can read financial statements and analyze business trends, but too often they fail because of an ingrained disdain for sales. They want to write and report, but haven’t worked up sufficient enthusiasm for market research, self-promotion and pitching,” she said.

  • Black Birth Blog Carnival: Call For Submissions

    Deadline: 20 March 2012

There are many blogs, and many bloggers out, there talking birth. Some are bloggers who blog about birth occasionally, while others talk birth regularly. Regardless of the frequency, they blog about the statistics, the interventions and the cesareans. They talk about the good births, the bad births, breastfeeding, the postpartum period and more. They discuss the how comes and the why’s, and there is no shortage of opinions on why you should and why you shouldn’t.

Amidst these many blogs are the few bloggers who might classify themselves Black, Mocha, African- American, Mahogany, Afrikan…. I call them Sista Midwives. Those few os us who in addition to blogging about birth often, and some exclusively, write posts that are written specifically for, about, and from our perspective as Black Women. One might ask…” So is birth really THAT much different for Black Women, when compared to Latina, Asian, or Caucasian?” I say yes, Yes, YES.

Sure the babies physically are born the same way. However… the joys and the pains of birth manifest differently in our lives; the spiritual, psychological, physical, emotional and cultural difference that exist are real and significant. It is just as important to note that as no two women of any ethnic group birth exactly the same, the birth stories and experiences of Black Women nationally and internationally are wide and varied.

In this first Carnival: Birthing While Black…A Historical Perspective, we invite you to submit an article or blog post that incorporates in some way, the history of Black Women giving birth. Write about the images that come to mind when you read the title for this first carnival. Tell us how your birth choices today are affected by your personal historical perspective. How do you think our birthing history affects the birth choices of women in our/your community? What unique bit of history can you share about the historical perspective of Birthing While Black? What gives you special pride when you look back into history and visualize Black Women giving birth? Submit an article or blog about anything you feel will highlight and incorporate our theme Birthing While Black…A Historical Perspective.

    WHAT IS A BLOG CARNIVAL

A blog carnival is a collection of blog posts from a variety of bloggers on a particular subject, published on the same day. This blog carnival will be published/go live Tuesday March 27th. In addition to posting his/her article, each blogger provides links to all of the other posts submitted. Because of this, blog carnivals are a great way to learn about other fabulous bloggers.

They give you an opportunity to connect with others and have the potential to increase traffic to your blog. If you do not have a personal blog and want to participate, please emails us ASAP at BlackBirthCarnival{at}gmail{dot}com so that we can find you a host blog for your article submission.

    GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSIONS

We are looking for posts that are well written, informative, thought provoking, and relevant to the theme of the carnival. We prefer that you submit a new, unpublished post for the carnival however, if you feel you have the “perfect post” that has been previously published we will accept it.

Please email your posts to us at BlackBirthCarnival{at}gmail{dot}com no later than Tuesday, March 20th.

Be sure to put March Carnival in the subject line of the email and don’t forget to give us the title of your post. We cannot accept your submission without a title.

You will receive an HTML code with instructions via email no later than March 26th. You will need to place this code in your blog post so that you will link up with all of the other blogs participating in the carnival. For the success of the carnival, it’s important that you add this code. Please do not publish your post until after midnight on the 27th. We are excited about this new Blog carnival and we look forward to receiving your submissions.

  • Researcher / Editor Wanted for Africa-Themed Text and Video Blog

Please read carefully through the detailed description below and let me know if you are convinced that you can meet high expectations in this role.

The project I want to develop is a text and video blog. The theme of the blog is: Africa is magic...and other random thoughts.

What do I mean by Africa is magic?

    - Contrary to widespread belief, wonderful things are happening daily in all corners of Africa
    - African talent can compete with anyone, anywhere, anytime (business, culture, sports, arts, music, movies, Internet, science, social activism, political activism, academia...)
    - In many African cultures, people have found a healthy balance between work, life, family and society despite challenging economic conditions
    - Creativity is off the charts in many areas, with people creating a lot out of very little (often using recycled waste products)
    - Innovation is also high in more modern fields like technology, web, health sciences, etc.
    - Africa is perceived as the next big thing for many savvy investors and we will showcase people/events/companies that make these investors believers

A few facts about my project:

    - The blog will start off as bilingual with English and French versions
    - My day job and non-stop travel doesn't allow me to handle this project by myself and still have a regularly updated blog
    - I need an researcher/editor for the English version
    - I need an researcher/editor for the French version (possibly same person as English but not necessarily)
    - Researcher/editor should be knowledgeable about Africa, positive about the continent and already doing interesting things online
    - The researcher/editor(s) will not be featured or showcased on the blog and will not hold any ownership rights on any intellectual property or revenue generating activities
    - I am not the NY Times so the payment should be affordable for an individual
    - They always say it's hard to make money from a blog so what I'm proposing will allow one or two talented writers/bloggers to make some money from blogging
    - The blog will also draw on submissions from visitors/readers of their "Africa is magic" story, video, photo, etc.
    - The blog will feature interviews of people who are helping to make Africa magical
    - The researcher/editor(s) will need to be interested in the theme and good with Internet research in order to discover "Africa is magic" stories, videos, etc. online for inclusion in the blog
    - It will start as a text blog and gradually the video content will increase
    - I intend to be featured in many of the videos as a "presenter"/on air talent
    - I am aiming to reach (gradually) at least 3 posts per week, 1 of which is video

Additional support which may be required (could also be done by another provider):

    1. Identify 5-10 blogs with a similar theme (not necessarily about Africa) and use them as best practice to recommend layout, content, structure for the blog (the ambition is to be the best Africa-related blog in substance, form and following)
    2. Create social media 2-way ecosystem for the blog (facebook, twitter, digg, YouTube, Dailymotion, LinkedIn...) all fed by the blog and vice versa
    3. Identify free ways to promote the blog

  • Abuja Writers' Forum Guest Writer Session: Umari Ayim (Nigeria)

    Date: 27 August 2011

Debutante novelist, Umari Ayim, will take the Abuja literati through the fictional world of Twilight At Terracotta Indigo, her maiden published work on August 27, 2011 at the pace-setting Guest Writer Session of the Abuja Writers Forum (AWF). Now in its third year, the event holds at the Pen and Pages Bookstore, White House Plaza, Plot 79, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja and consistently features an exciting array of emerging and established writers.

Umari Rosemary Ayim who hails from Cross River State is in her twenties and has taken a daring professional move by being a full-time writer rather than practicing law. She attended Federal Government Girls College, New Bussa, Niger State and proceeded to the University of Lagos to study law. After graduation, she could no longer hold back her passion for writing and began work on what has now become her debut novel, Terracotta Indigo. Issued by MagicWand Publishing, the novel is set in Lagos and explores the city’s disposition as a melting pot of cultures through characters who reside in the highbrow areas of Victoria Island and Lekki.
According to Ayim, her motivation for writing the novel is from the desire to address the inherent problems of tribalism, social and class discrimination, stigmatization and the effect of poverty. In a recent review of the novel, writer and literary activist Dr Kabura Zakama, who is also a veterinarian professionally, observes that the author, “has served us with a delicious story that captivates us from the deceptively simple opening to the surprising twist at the end. Miss Ayim’s voice comes through as a fresh breath on the Nigerian literary scene and is someone worth watch out for.”

While Bola Essien-Nelson writes, “as far as I'm concerned, (Terracotta Indigo is) a supremely well thought out and superbly spun romantic thriller! I was totally blindsided and did not see THAT (ending) coming at all! Great job Umari! I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it.”

Recounting the process of putting the novel together, Ayim states on her blogsite:” For me, it was a journey that had its ups and downs. From the moment I put the first lines down on a scanty forty leaves notebook I had stumbled across in my hostel room in 2008, I fell in love with Marlene and drooled over Femi's cucumber cool character. The story rolled past my pen ink and by I started hitting the keyboard of my Acer laptop, my fingers flew effortlessly and of their own accord. Apparently, I had known Femi and Marlene in another life and befriended them.

"Twilight at Terracotta Indigo for me was more than a story, it was part of a healing process. I had just come out of a relationship, and I need an outlet for my emotions. Coupled with my endless musing about life and the social practices I saw as unfair, I poured my heart out into the story. There were those terror filled nail biting moments when I sorted through my lines, checking to see if the suspense had been maintained and the potential reading audience had enough to keep them turning page after page till they found answers to the questions that seemed to trail the lives of my characters.”

Ms Ayim acknowledges that her interest in writing started first through being exposed to a reading culture by her dad at an early stage, who as early as when she was eight years would explain William Shakespeare’s plays to her. She eventually became fascinated by the play Macbeth which she read severally and began reciting her favourite lines to classmates and teachers. At secondary school she was drawn to several titles in the African Writers Series (AWS). However, she cites the African-American writer and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou, as a major influence on her writing and social consciousness.

The Abuja-based Ayim belongs to a fledgling Pan-Africanist feminist group, WomenUnder30 with membership currently drawn from Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Somalia and Zimbabwe. The group seeks to promote excellence among African young women under the age of 30 through the use of Information and Communication Technology. This activist side of her is also reflected in several articles which have been published in the Guardian Newspapers.

Apart from writing fiction and blogging, Ms Ayim writes plays and has a forthcoming poetry collection. She also is working on a second novel whose working title is “Khaki”, an indication of the subject-matter.

The Guest Writer Session includes side attractions of poetry performance, mini art exhibition, a raffle-draw for book, and a stirring dose of live music. The Abuja Writer’s Forum meets three Sundays each month and hosts a reading on every last Saturday at the International Institute of Journalism and Pen and Pages respectively. -Abdullahi Abubakar, Public Relations Officer, AbujaWriters’ Forum

  • Call For Contributions/ Writers: Women And The Political Process In Africa

Make Every Woman Count is looking for writers to contribute to a 3-month series on women and political participation in Africa. Comprising more than 50% of the world’s population, women continue to be under-represented as voters, political leaders and elected officials. There is reason to be optimistic though. Africa, more than any other region, has made significant progress on increasing women’s political participation.

The proportion of seats held by women in single or lower houses of national parliaments has risen in Northern Africa from 3% in 2000 to 12% in 2011. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the proportion of seats went from 13% in 2000 to 20% in 2011.

What do you think about these numbers? Do they matter? What do you think needs to be done to increase them? Have they translated into improvements in the quality of life for women in Africa? If yes, how? If no, why? The National Democratic Institute claims that more women in politics at all levels contributes to honest government, peace, and positive developments in education, infrastructure and health standards, is this the case? Tell us your thoughts.
