    • The accommodation provided in Bangalore and Shanghai is suitable only for single occupancy. We regret that we are unable to accommodate partners, family (or pets!)

    • In the case of the Indian residency, accommodation may be isolated so applicants should be seeking a period of quiet, sustained work. The residency is not a base from which to travel from.

    • In the case of the Shanghai residency, accommodation will be centrally located and in the thick of a noisy city. Whilst it is intended that the writer should be seeking a period of sustained work, it must be noted that this will probably not be happening in very quiet surroundings. The residency is not a base from which to travel from.

  • Abuja Writers Forum's April Guest Writer Session to Feature Betty Abah (Nigeria)

    Date: 28 April 2012

After kick-starting 2012 with the exciting February and March editions of the Abuja Writers Forum (AWF) Guest Writer Session with Uche Ezechukwu, Steve Okeocha, Theresa Ameh and K K Iloduba, the much acclaimed monthly event now in its fourth year brings more literary thrills with the Lagos-based award-winning journalist, gender activist and poetess, Betty Abah on April 28.

The event which has now relocated to Hamdala Plaza on Jimmy Carter Street, Asokoro, Abuja from its previous Pen and Pages Bookshop base, will also feature interludes with the University of Uyo-trained painter Millicent Osumuo, the singer-cum-saxaphonist Lorriane Panam, and the budding short story writer Lami Yakubu.

Author of two poetry collections – Sound of Broken Chains and Go Tell Our King - Betty Abah began writing even before she became a teenager. It is no surprise that writing has become very much a part of her life, including six active years of journalism. Sound of Broken Chains is a collection of devotional poems with the writer drawing attention to the fact that whatever chains tie us down as individuals, families and at national level, if we are determined, we can break the chains and be liberated. In her own words, “It may not necessarily be spiritual chains; it can be social or psychological chains.” The poems in her latest work, Go Tell Our King draw from her involvement with the media, women’s rights, political advocacy and her indigenous Idoma locale.
Abah who hails from the Idoma speaking part of Benue State, obtained a degree in English and Literary Studies from the University of Calabar in 1999. Her passion for writing budded early in life for while in school, she wrote for various campus publications and served as literary editor of Quill, the departmental magazine, was deputy editor of Malabor Watch, a publication of the Student Union Government university and served as pioneer chairperson of the university branch of the National Association of Campus Women Journalists (NACWOJ).

During the compulsory National Youth Service (NYSC), she served as press club coordinator and production editor of the maiden edition of the Regalite magazine of Regal College, Sagamu, Ogun State, part of whose activities earned me the NYSC’s “State Honours Award’
Abah worked as a journalist for Nigerian publications including the influential TELL and NEWSWATCH Magazines, and was a recipient of numerous professional fellowships including the Nigeria Media Merit Award, the Diamond Award for Media Excellence, the American Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship (AFPF) and the Knight Public Health Journalism Fellowships.
The AFPF saw her reporting at the Rocky Mountain News in Colorado for five months in 2006 and undergoing several journalism trainings in the USA and Canada. In the course of the fellowship, Abah received two other fellowships-the John Knight Health Reporting Fellowship (which saw her undergoing training on health reporting at the Centre for Dis-eases Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., and the Kaiser Family Foundation Fellowship, which entailed health training at the Canadian Broadcasting Cooperation (CBC), Toronto and reporting the International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada. In July 2010, Abah was among young tobacco control activists selected from across the world for the Global Tobacco Leadership Training at the Johns Hop-kins University in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. After she got the fellowship, Abah focused on health journalism.

Her writing and development activities have won her several awards including Poet of the Year (1995) by her department at the university, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) State Honour’s Award (Ogun State) 2001, Travel/Tourism Re-porter of the Year Award by the Nigeria Media Merit Awards (NMMA) 2003 and UNICEF-sponsored “Child Friendly Journalist” by the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), 2008, among others.

Since its inception four years ago, the Guest Writer Session has been a consistent feature of the nation’s literary scene. The April 28, 2012 edition which starts at 4pm, will include the usual side attractions of poetry performance, mini art exhibition, and a raffle-draw as well as live music. The Abuja Writer’s Forum meets three Sundays each month and hosts a reading on every last Saturday of the month.

  • John Burroughs and Leo Biaggi de Blasys Bogliasco Fellowships (no restriction on nationality)

    Deadline: 15 April 2012

There are two special Bogliasco fellowships that are offered without restriction on nationality and cover travel expenses (below). Note that with the regular Bogliasco Fellowship, "the cost of transportation to and from Genoa is the responsibility of the Fellows, as are all other personal expenses incurred during the Fellowship period." These special fellowships as stated here MAY BE available during the 2012-2013 academic year.

John Burroughs Bogliasco Fellowship in Literature

Established by George Capen Bitting, this Special Fellowship is named in honor of the American naturalist and essayist who was active in the evolution of the U.S. conservation movement. Along with Henry David Thoreau, John Burroughs was an important practitioner of the American literary genre, the nature essay. This Special Fellowship is awarded, without restriction on nationality, to persons working in creative writing. In addition to reimbursing travel expenses to and from Genoa, this Fellowship provides a cash stipend.

Leo Biaggi de Blasys Bogliasco Fellowship

Named for the Swiss industrialist whose bequest enabled the establishment of the Bogliasco Foundation and Liguria Study Center for the Arts and Humanities, this Fellowship was created by members of the Biaggi family. It is awarded, without restriction of discipline, to persons living in those parts of the world where the cost of travel to Genoa may be prohibitive. The Leo Biaggi de Blasys Bogliasco Fellowship provides reimbursement of travel expenses and a modest cash stipend.

    INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

Bogliasco Fellowships are awarded to qualified persons working in the various disciplines of the Arts and Humanities without regard to nationality, age, race, or gender.

To be eligible for the award of a Fellowship, applicants should demonstrate significant achievement in their disciplines, commensurate with their age and experience. Please note that Bogliasco Fellowships are not awarded to students currently in a degree-granting program. The Foundation gives preference to persons whose applications suggest that they would be comfortable working in an intimate, international, multi-lingual community of scholars and artists.

The following materials are required of all candidates for Fellowships. The written documents may be submitted in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish.

    (1) The completed application form.

    (2) Three letters of reference, which must be sent to the Foundation as digital files.

    (3) A short-form curriculum vitae, three pages in length.

    (4) A one-page description of the project that the applicant would pursue during her/his stay at the Liguria Study Center.

    (5) A sample of the applicant’s work that has been published, performed, exhibited, or otherwise publicly presented during the last five years.

Specific information for each page of the application may be opened by clicking the [Information] buttons at the bottom of the pages. We suggest that you read carefully this information as you complete your application.

Bogliasco Fellows may be accompanied by their spouses/partners during their stay at the Liguria Study Center. Spouses/partners who intend to pursue a project in one of the disciplines, and who wish to be designated as Bogliasco Fellows, must submit separate and complete applications.

There are certain practical issues that may influence the granting or scheduling of a Fellowship:

Reapplications: Persons who have previously been awarded Bogliasco Fellowships are eligible to reapply for subsequent Fellowships, but only after a period of three years has elapsed. For example, Bogliasco Fellows who were in residence during the winter-spring 2010 semester are eligible to reapply for winter-spring 2013.

Practical Restrictions: Before preparing an application you should consult with an officer of the Foundation (info@bfny.org) if you or your spouse/partner have either of the following:

    — food allergies or other dietary restrictions,
    — problems walking up and down stairs or steep inclines.

If you decide to submit an application for a Bogliasco Fellowship, and have questions, please feel free to contact the Foundation office (see below).

Deadlines for the submission of applications are as follows: January 15, 2012, for residencies during the fall-winter semester beginning in September 2012, and April 15, 2012, for the winter-spring semester beginning in February 2013.

  • Paying Market: Scifia (pay: $25 per story)

Scifia is a science fiction publishing entity committed to promoting best practices among human beings for furthering the development of the consciousness and technological prowess of the human race.

    THE YES-YES LIST

Scifia is open to most subgenres. This includes hard scifi, political scifi, psychological scifi, sci-comedy, sci-horror, and sociological scifi. However, we are actively seeking submissions of the following kinds:

    • Alien protagonist – Any story where the main character is an alien, particularly those told from the alien’s POV
    • Alternate universe – Any story for which the many worlds theory has to be true within the universe of the story or any alternate history story which does not fall into a category on the NO-NO list (see below)
    • Cyber – Any story where if someone asked you what subgenre your story fits into, you could easily fit a “cyber” into your description
    • Elections – Alien elections, intergalactic elections, elections of military leaders, elections of humans to political office etc.
    • Extinct creatures – Any science fiction story featuring an organism currently known or believed to be extinct
    • GLBTQI – Any science fiction story featuring a main character who is gay, lesbian, transgendered, queer, intersex or otherwise possessed of a sexuality, sexual morphology, gender identity or gender expression which is not describable as “heterosexual,” “male,” “female,” “man,” or “woman” as traditionally misunderstood.
    • Time travel – Yes, we want time travel stories. Believe it or not. But please no: grandfather paradoxes, “Time Patrol” rip-offs, or stories where the invention of time travel requires that time travel already exists

I WANT TO HELP THE HUMANS; HOW DO I SUBMIT?

If you have a great story that you think would be suitable for Scifia, click the "Submit to Scifia" button below. You will be taken directly to our submission form.

Do not include a bio or history of prior publication. Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of quality and marketability.

HOW CAN I MAXIMIZE MY CHANCES OF GETTING A STORY ACCEPTED?

When reviewing works of science fiction, our editor has two fundamental questions in mind:

    • Is this an example of good writing in general?
    • Is this story enhanced in a meaningful way by its science fiction element(s)?

If the answers to the above two questions are “yes,” the odds are that your story will eventually find a home in a publication. Whether that’s one of our publications will largely depend on whether your story fits our current needs.

    THE NO-NO LIST

    Please do not send:

    • 2nd person POV stories
    • American Civil War alternate history stories
    • Any story featuring elves, fairies, gnomes etc. in a purely fantasy setting
    • Any story featuring vampires of any kind in any setting
    • Any story making more than passing reference to the “laws of robotics”
    • Fan fiction of any kind
    • FanboyZ in space!
    • Grandfather paradoxes
    • Poetry (unless you are Rimbaud or Bukowski)
    • Pure horror
    • Stories without a clear beginning, middle and end

This is not to say that such stories cannot make for innovative, exciting science fiction. It is to say that such stories would be better placed elsewhere.

    HOW DO I GET PAID?

Authors will be paid $25 via PayPal upon acceptance, for any story of any length.

Royalty pay is on the following schedule:

An ISSUE is any collection of stories and/or articles packaged together for sale in any electronic or print format, with the exception of the Scifia website(s) and any Scifia related promotional materials.

For any author who submits an accepted story prior to September 1, 2012 a 30% royalty on net receipts for any Scifia ISSUE within which the accepted work appears will be split equally between authors contributing to that ISSUE. This royalty will be paid on a quarterly basis for twelve months following the first publication of said story in any ISSUE in which it appears.

If you are thinking about submitting a work that has not been previously published, keep in mind that most publications will not publish pieces that have been previously published in print, eBook, or on the web. After we publish your work, it can only be marketed as a reprint. This severely limits the number of markets that will accept it, and drastically reduces the pay rate it can receive. It is up to you, as an author who has likely worked many hours to produce your work, to decide if publishing your piece in ebook, epub, ibook, audiobook, podcast and/or webcomic format(s), and giving up your First Publishing Right for a mere $25 and your share of 30% of net receipts, is really what you want to do.

WHAT RESPONSE TIME SHOULD I EXPECT?

You should receive word regarding your submission within four weeks of sending your initial email. If you have not heard back in four weeks time, you should inquire at: submissions@scifia.com.

SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS AND PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED STORIES

Simultaneous submissions are discouraged. That said, we have no problem publishing a story that is going to appear in another publication or that has already done so. What we don’t want is the scenario where we suddenly find out that we cannot publish a story that you submitted and we accepted without incurring a large headache. Let us know immediately if a story you have submitted to Scifia has been accepted elsewhere.

    RIGHTS

Upon acceptance of your submission, Scifia reserves the NONEXCLUSIVE right to publish your content for sale in any format, including but not limited to ebook, epub, ibook, audiobook, podcast and webcomic. You retain the right to do the same and to sell anyone else the NONEXCLUSIVE right to also publish your work. We do not even ask that you refrain from self-publishing your content during any period of time. (Courtesy link-backs, however, are always appreciated, where applicable.) Go ahead and sell yourself. We will sell you too.

Scifia will make no substantive alterations to your work’s text or title without your express approval.

  • The 2012 Palestine Festival of Literature Opens May 5th in Gaza

    Date: 5 - 9 May 2012 (Gaza), 11 May 2012 (Cairo)

The Festival will take place in Gaza from May 5th to May 9th, with an event in Ramallah on May 5th and a reprise event in Cairo on May 11th.

It has been a longstanding aim of the festival to travel to Gaza. Since it started in 2008 PalFest has taken the form of a travelling festival – moving to audiences constrained and divided by Israel’s military occupation, establishing creative links between Palestine and the rest of the world and pitting the power of culture against the culture of power.

PalFest has tried several times in the past to reach Gaza from the Occupied Palestinian Territories but has never been able to because of the restrictions put in place by the Israeli Occupation. Gaza has been under siege and isolated from the rest of the world since 2007.
This May, PalFest 2012 will bring a group of writers, educators and artists through the Rafah crossing from Egypt to perform free public events, run workshops with students of varying ages and meet civil society leaders in Gaza.

PalFest has endorsed the 2004 Palestinian call for the academic and cultural boycott of Israel. PalFest 2012 stands against the siege of Gaza; it is committed to re-invigorating cultural ties between Arab countries, ties that have been eroded for too long. The Festival will be bringing writers and artists from across the Arab world and beyond.

While the Festival’s primary activities will be taking place in Gaza, PalFest works to retain its active presence in the West Bank. British authors Rachel Holmes and Bee Rowlatt will lead extended creative writing workshops in Birzeit with the Palestine Writing Workshop. They will also be joining Maya Abu el-Hayat, Abd al-Rahim al-Sheikh and Imad Sayrafi on stage at the Sakakini Centre on May 5th. A one-day children’s literature festival will be held during the Festival, with plans for a larger children’s event in the summer.

Beyond the Festival dates PalFest continues its educational programme through its sister organization the Palestine Writing Workshop, whose activities include regular book clubs, creative writing classes and the creation and maintenance of a library.

PalFest will be launching a new, bi-lingual website this week. Developed with the support of the UK Arts Council, the site will be profiling new literary talent from across Palestine and the diaspora as well as developing an online space for critical feedback between young writers and more established authors.

  • Now Open: £10,000 Caine Prize for African Writing 2012

    Deadline: 31 January 2012

The Caine Prize is open to writers from anywhere in Africa for work published in English. Its focus is on the short story, as reflecting the contemporary development of the African story-telling tradition.

    ELIGIBILITY

    * Unpublished work is not eligible for the Caine Prize.
    * Submissions should be made by publishers only.
    * Only one story per author will be considered in any one year.
    * We require 6 copies of the work in its originally published version.
    * If the work is published in a book or journal, we would like to receive at least one copy of the book / journal and five photocopies; but particularly where several stories are submitted from one anthology we would like if possible to receive six copies of the book / journal itself.
    * If the work is published online, we would like to receive six photocopies.
    * Only fictional work is eligible.

Please note that works which do not conform to the criteria will not be considered for the prize. Please do not waste your own time and postage by sending in material which is unsuitable. Works not eligible for entry include stories for children, factual writing, plays, biography, works shorter than 3000 words and unpublished work. If you are not sure whether your work is eligible, please email us for advice.

    HOW TO ENTER

Publishers should post six hard copies of the story for consideration to:

    Nick Elam
The Caine Prize for African Writing
    The Menier Gallery
    Menier Chocolate Factory
    51 Southwark Street
    London SE1 1RU

Entries should be accompanied by a letter from the publisher conveying a short CV or brief biography of the writer, and specifying which African country the writer comes from.

    FULL RULES

The Prize is awarded to a short story by an African writer published in English, whether in Africa or elsewhere. Indicative length is between 3000 and 10,000 words.

“An African writer” is taken to mean someone who was born in Africa, or who is a national of an African country, or whose parents are African, and whose work has reflected African sensibilities.

There is a cash prize of £10,000 for the winning author and a travel award for each of the short-listed candidates (up to five in all).

For practical reasons, unpublished work and work in other languages is not eligible. Works translated into English from other languages are not be excluded, provided they have been published in translation, and should such a work win, a proportion of the prize would be awarded to the translator.

The award is made in July each year, the deadline for submissions being 31 January. Works received after that date will be put forward to the next year's prize. The short-list is selected from work originally published in the five years preceding the submissions deadline and not previously considered for a Caine Prize. The deadline for the next prize is 31 January 2012; works must have been published between 1 February 2007 and the closing date.

In general it is unwise to delay the submission of entries until shortly before the deadline: postal and delivery hiccups can easily result in material arriving too late. It is far better to submit material a few weeks in advance.

NB: There is no application form. Submissions should be made by publishers, in the form of six original published copies of the work for consideration. If published in a magazine or journal we will accept one original copy plus five photocopies, but would prefer six original copies. These should be sent to the address below.

We are happy to take submissions from internet magazines, but must insist that we receive six hard copies of these, as of other submissions. Also it is important that internet entries be carefully edited: past judges have not viewed favourably entries containing typos and other errors.

The judges will consider only one work per writer in any one year, and only short stories are eligible.

Every effort is made to publicise the work of the short-listed authors through the broadcast as well as the printed media.

Winning and short-listed authors will be invited to participate in writers’ workshops in Africa, London and elsewhere as resources permit.
