  • Call for Essays/ Creative Writing: Feminist Studies Journal's "Africa Reconfigued" Issue

    Deadline: 1 December 2012

    AFRICA RECONFIGURED

How does feminist scholarship on African regions push conventional disciplinary boundaries? How does feminist work in cinema studies, linguistics, cultural studies, literature, history, and anthropology, for example, reconfigure how Africa is represented in the broader academy? Feminist Studies welcomes submissions on a variety of topics dealing broadly with the continent of Africa, with the goal of featuring exciting feminist scholarship in African Studies and questioning representations of Africa for feminist readers outside the area.

We welcome full-length research manuscripts (10,500 words), review essays, short commentaries on polices, creative writing, and art essays. Please e-mail Editorial Director Ashwini Tambe to signal your interest in submitting material.

Deadline for submitting manuscripts: December 1, 2012.

    RESEARCH AND CRITICISM

Feminist Studies publishes research and criticism that address theoretical issues and offer analyses of interest to feminist scholars across disciplines. Although many, if not most, of the articles we publish draw on the methodology of a single discipline, we especially encourage scholars to pursue truly interdisciplinary research and research methodologies that not only showcase but integrate contributions from multiple disciplines.

Submissions should not exceed 10,500 words, approximately 35 pages, including endnotes. Please consult the 16th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style for proper manuscript form and endnote citation style.

    How to Submit:

For your submission to be complete, please send all of the following:

    • One double-spaced hard copy mailed to Feminist Studies, 0103 Taliaferro Hall, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742. (In order to protect anonymity, the author's name should appear only a separate title page and not on the manuscript itself.)
    • An electronic copy to submit@feministstudies.org. (Alternatively, you may include a CD with the mailed hard copy.) Please send the electronic file as a Word or WordPerfect document, not as a PDF.
    • A 200-word (or fewer) abstract
    • A cover note with mailing and e-mail addresses.

    CREATIVE WRITING

Feminist Studies is deeply committed to publishing creative work. Beginning with our very first issue published in 1972, we have included creative work in every issue. We continue to welcome all forms of written creative expression, including but not limited to poetry and short fiction in all forms. We are interested in work that addresses questions of interest to the Feminist Studies audience, particularly work that pushes past the boundaries of what has been done before. We look for creative work that is intellectually challenging and aesthetically adventurous, that is in complicated dialogue with feminist ideas and concepts, and that shifts our readers into new perspectives on women/gender.

We only consider original work that is not under review elsewhere. Since creative work will not be returned, authors should retain a copy of their work. If other work is cited in the piece, please use our citation style. Because of space constraints we are unable to publish individual pieces that run longer than 25 pages.

Deadlines for submission of creative work are May 1 and December 1. After each deadline, all work will be reviewed by our creative writing editor. • Deadline May 15 | Jane Austen Society's 2012 International Essay Contest

    Deadline: 15 May 2012

To foster the study and appreciation of Jane Austen, JASNA conducts an annual student Essay Contest, with support generously provided by the Sonia Raiziss Giop Charitable Foundation.

Students interested in the life and works of Jane Austen are encouraged to enter. The Essay Contest is open to students world-wide at the high school, college/university, and post-graduate levels of study. Entrants do not need to be members of JASNA. Students must be enrolled full-time or part-time in coursework during one or more semesters/quarters of the contest year. Home-schooled students at the high school level are also eligible. Part-time is defined for the college/university level as a minimum of six credit hours and for the post-graduate level as a minimum of three credit hours.

    2012 Essay Contest

The 2012 Essay Contest topic aligns with the JASNA Annual General Meeting theme, “Sex, Money and Power in Jane Austen’s Fiction”:

How do sex, money, and power enable characters in Austen's novels to manipulate each other, and what forms of resistance are there to that manipulation? Consider no more than two of Austen’s novels or other major works and analyze the modes of manipulation, whether successful or unsuccessful.

    Essay Contest Awards

JASNA awards scholarships to the winners in each of three categories: High School, College/University, and Post-Graduate.

    First Place

    • One year’s membership in JASNA for both the winner and his or her mentor
    • $1000 scholarship
    • Free registration and two nights’ lodging for JASNA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in New York [Note: Transportation to New York is not provided.]
    • Recognition at the AGM and on the JASNA web site
    • Publication of the essay on JASNA’s web site

    • Recognition at the AGM and on the JASNA web site
    • Publication of the essay on JASNA’s web site
    • One of Jane Austen’s novels

    Essay Submissions

The judges value original insights and clear, correct writing. Essays should be directed to a well-informed general audience of JASNA members rather than to a strictly academic audience. Essays should be based primarily on the students’ own observations, with adequate support from the Jane Austen work(s) under discussion. Since JASNA members are very familiar with Jane Austen’s works, plot summary is unnecessary.

Essays written for coursework may be submitted. If research is used as support, students should rely on no more than five sources and should avoid academic terminology unless terms are clearly defined in the body of the essay.

Reading previous winning essays will give entrants a very good idea of the sort of essay JASNA is seeking. Answers to frequently-asked questions are also available on this site.

    Contest Rules

  • Call for Papers: Madness and Mayhem in Women's Novels of the Black Diaspora (MLA Convention, Boston)

    Deadline: 15 March 2012

Female madness is well represented within European and Anglo-American literature, letters, and scholarly endeavors. From Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar’s inaugural The Madwoman in the Attic (1979) to Elaine Showalter’s The Female Malady (1987) and more recent forays into madness as a trope of female (dis)empowerment, mental illness has been largely feminized and reified into a space of literary whiteness. Nevertheless, this is paradoxical, considering the multiplicity of female writers of the black diaspora who incorporate mental illness into their work.

This panel will focus on twentieth and twenty-first century novels by black women authors writing from Africa, the Americas, and Europe, who incorporate madness as a site of political, cultural, and artistic resistance, particularly as embodied in the use of experimental writing practices. This panel thus creates a conversation at the crossroads where aesthetic praxis morphs into political engagement. Interdisciplinary scholarship is welcomed. There is the potential for an edited volume.

  • Fellowship Available under the Netherlands Fellowship Programme: RNTC Internet for Journalists Course (developing countries)

    Deadline: 1 February 2012

    Course aim

To strengthen the capacity of broadcast, print and online journalists and of the organisations they work for to use the Internet for the purposes of research, publication and distribution.

    Course information

    Journalism and the Internet

The Internet is an exciting medium for journalists and media organisations. Journalists can find a wealth of information, previously difficult to obtain, which can help them in their research and in keeping abreast of events and trends. The speed of the internet and its growing ubiquity (thanks also to the rise of mobile phones) means that it is increasingly for journalists the first medium on which their stories appear. On the internet they can present their news stories in new and attractive ways, supported by additional background material, using a variety of media, and stored in dossiers and archives for later retrieval. The rapid evolution of interactive technologies and social media also mean that, more than ever, journalists can engage with their audiences and readers.

As an integrated medium of publication, distribution and communication, in which the traditional, clear-cut divisions between text, graphics, audio and video are blurred, the internet poses a lot of challenges. Journalists, who saw themselves first and foremost as print or broadcast journalists now work as ‘content providers’ in multimedia newsrooms, generating material for a variety of different media platforms.

The principles of interactivity and non-linearity require that information for the internet has to be ordered and presented differently. Its multimedia nature also makes organisational demands. New structures have to be designed to cope with the new ways of production, publication and distribution. New ways of working pose a challenge to established working practices and attitudes. New business models have to be developed and adopted.

Since the Internet is still a relatively young medium, there is plenty of experimentation and innovation going on. The rise of social networks, ‘civilian journalism’ and the success of ‘YouTube’ mean that the Internet has also become an established competitor of mainstream media for the attention of audiences and readers worldwide. These developments are also changing the traditional role of journalists as well as their relationship with their audiences and readers. To be able to face the challenges of the 21st century, it is important that media organisations and the people who work for adapt to the changes taking place and incorporate them in the way they work.

    Methodology: learning by doing

The course will be dedicated to enabling the participating journalists to work as Internet journalists/producers. The focus will be on content rather than on technical skills. Attention will be paid to the two central tenets of the Internet: information and communication. Special emphasis will be placed on the three main principles of multimedia environments: the multimedia mix, interactivity and non-linearity. The emphasis will be on learning by doing, focusing on theory and practice. In addition to attending course sessions and workshops, participants will be sent on a number of radio or television location assignments.

The potential and the use of the Internet as a source of information will be explored (the Internet as a research tool), and options for its use as a medium of communication, publication and distribution analysed and applied to the specific situation of the participants. The possibilities and advantages of the Internet – as well as some of its drawbacks – for journalists and the organisations they work for will be highlighted.

The participants will be from different professional media (radio, television, print, online). The aim of the course is to transcend these boundaries and merge the disciplines in search of the ideal of a multimedia journalist. Participants will acquire knowledge of the essentials of web-design (structure, interaction and lay-out) and skills for the development of websites and for production for the Internet, such as writing non-linear, interactive pieces, making graphics and producing audio and video. Participants will analyse existing examples of websites attached to newspapers, magazines and broadcasting organisations.
