The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA), in collaboration with FARA, Yam-Pukri, CAFAN, AYF, ANAFE, SPC/PAFPNET is organizing the Youth in Agriculture Blog Competition (YoBloCo Awards). To submit your blog, follow the adequate link below:

    - Institutional blog

    - Individual blog

Check the Frequently Asked Questions about the Yobloco Awards here

    This blog competition aims to:

    • Put into limelight issues, successes and challenges faced by youth engaged in: agriculture in urban and rural areas;
    • Encourage the production of information and the use of new information technologies by young farmers’ groups and organizations interested in the “youth in agriculture” question;
    • Promote the sharing of information on the issues of agriculture and rural development in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries.

This competition is also being launched in the framework of the commemoration of the United Nations International Year of Youth.

    1. Who can participate

The YoBloCo Awards are open in two categories, individual category and institutional category.

When young members of an organization submit an entry in the “Institutional category”, they apply on behalf of their organization. If the entry wins an award, it’s the organization which will be declared winner and will receive the cash prize. The blog creator or a representative of blog creators (if it’s a team) will be invited for the prize giving ceremony and receive a trophy on behalf of the winning organization. When a team applies on behalf of their organization, the person representing the team must be specified in the application process. The cash prize won would be sent to the organization.

  • Researcher / Editor Wanted for Africa-Themed Text and Video Blog

Please read carefully through the detailed description below and let me know if you are convinced that you can meet high expectations in this role.

The project I want to develop is a text and video blog. The theme of the blog is: Africa is magic...and other random thoughts.

What do I mean by Africa is magic?

    - Contrary to widespread belief, wonderful things are happening daily in all corners of Africa
    - African talent can compete with anyone, anywhere, anytime (business, culture, sports, arts, music, movies, Internet, science, social activism, political activism, academia...)
    - In many African cultures, people have found a healthy balance between work, life, family and society despite challenging economic conditions
    - Creativity is off the charts in many areas, with people creating a lot out of very little (often using recycled waste products)
    - Innovation is also high in more modern fields like technology, web, health sciences, etc.
    - Africa is perceived as the next big thing for many savvy investors and we will showcase people/events/companies that make these investors believers

A few facts about my project:

    - The blog will start off as bilingual with English and French versions
    - My day job and non-stop travel doesn't allow me to handle this project by myself and still have a regularly updated blog
    - I need an researcher/editor for the English version
    - I need an researcher/editor for the French version (possibly same person as English but not necessarily)
    - Researcher/editor should be knowledgeable about Africa, positive about the continent and already doing interesting things online
    - The researcher/editor(s) will not be featured or showcased on the blog and will not hold any ownership rights on any intellectual property or revenue generating activities
    - I am not the NY Times so the payment should be affordable for an individual
    - They always say it's hard to make money from a blog so what I'm proposing will allow one or two talented writers/bloggers to make some money from blogging
    - The blog will also draw on submissions from visitors/readers of their "Africa is magic" story, video, photo, etc.
    - The blog will feature interviews of people who are helping to make Africa magical
    - The researcher/editor(s) will need to be interested in the theme and good with Internet research in order to discover "Africa is magic" stories, videos, etc. online for inclusion in the blog
    - It will start as a text blog and gradually the video content will increase
    - I intend to be featured in many of the videos as a "presenter"/on air talent
    - I am aiming to reach (gradually) at least 3 posts per week, 1 of which is video

Additional support which may be required (could also be done by another provider):

    1. Identify 5-10 blogs with a similar theme (not necessarily about Africa) and use them as best practice to recommend layout, content, structure for the blog (the ambition is to be the best Africa-related blog in substance, form and following)
    2. Create social media 2-way ecosystem for the blog (facebook, twitter, digg, YouTube, Dailymotion, LinkedIn...) all fed by the blog and vice versa
    3. Identify free ways to promote the blog
    4. Identify fee based ways to promote the blog in a cost effective and targeted way

Depending on the stage of the project and the scope of work, I expect your time commitment to be around 5-10 hours/week.

I look forward to your (specific) reply. I need to be convinced of your alignment with the theme and your mastery of social media.

  • Black Birth Blog Carnival: Call For Submissions

    Deadline: 20 March 2012

There are many blogs, and many bloggers out, there talking birth. Some are bloggers who blog about birth occasionally, while others talk birth regularly. Regardless of the frequency, they blog about the statistics, the interventions and the cesareans. They talk about the good births, the bad births, breastfeeding, the postpartum period and more. They discuss the how comes and the why’s, and there is no shortage of opinions on why you should and why you shouldn’t.

Amidst these many blogs are the few bloggers who might classify themselves Black, Mocha, African- American, Mahogany, Afrikan…. I call them Sista Midwives. Those few os us who in addition to blogging about birth often, and some exclusively, write posts that are written specifically for, about, and from our perspective as Black Women. One might ask…” So is birth really THAT much different for Black Women, when compared to Latina, Asian, or Caucasian?” I say yes, Yes, YES.

Sure the babies physically are born the same way. However… the joys and the pains of birth manifest differently in our lives; the spiritual, psychological, physical, emotional and cultural difference that exist are real and significant. It is just as important to note that as no two women of any ethnic group birth exactly the same, the birth stories and experiences of Black Women nationally and internationally are wide and varied.

In this first Carnival: Birthing While Black…A Historical Perspective, we invite you to submit an article or blog post that incorporates in some way, the history of Black Women giving birth. Write about the images that come to mind when you read the title for this first carnival. Tell us how your birth choices today are affected by your personal historical perspective. How do you think our birthing history affects the birth choices of women in our/your community? What unique bit of history can you share about the historical perspective of Birthing While Black? What gives you special pride when you look back into history and visualize Black Women giving birth? Submit an article or blog about anything you feel will highlight and incorporate our theme Birthing While Black…A Historical Perspective.

    WHAT IS A BLOG CARNIVAL

A blog carnival is a collection of blog posts from a variety of bloggers on a particular subject, published on the same day. This blog carnival will be published/go live Tuesday March 27th. In addition to posting his/her article, each blogger provides links to all of the other posts submitted. Because of this, blog carnivals are a great way to learn about other fabulous bloggers.

They give you an opportunity to connect with others and have the potential to increase traffic to your blog. If you do not have a personal blog and want to participate, please emails us ASAP at BlackBirthCarnival{at}gmail{dot}com so that we can find you a host blog for your article submission.

    GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSIONS

We are looking for posts that are well written, informative, thought provoking, and relevant to the theme of the carnival. We prefer that you submit a new, unpublished post for the carnival however, if you feel you have the “perfect post” that has been previously published we will accept it.

Please email your posts to us at BlackBirthCarnival{at}gmail{dot}com no later than Tuesday, March 20th.

Be sure to put March Carnival in the subject line of the email and don’t forget to give us the title of your post. We cannot accept your submission without a title.

You will receive an HTML code with instructions via email no later than March 26th. You will need to place this code in your blog post so that you will link up with all of the other blogs participating in the carnival. For the success of the carnival, it’s important that you add this code. Please do not publish your post until after midnight on the 27th. We are excited about this new Blog carnival and we look forward to receiving your submissions.

  • Writers Afrika is back - please read

Writers Afrika is back - please read

2011 wasn't a good year for us. We're freelancers and we used to rent an office where we could collectively work and at the same time be of service to writers worldwide. But that (and other resources) had to go.

From the time that we announced that we had to stop updating this blog, we've received hundreds of responses from interested people/ organizations who would like to take over. We're very sorry for not replying. We haven't had the chance to sit down and talk about the proposals as we would like to be able to revive this blog ourselves.

Now, we're seeking your help to get us started again. We've redesigned the blog for easier navigation and a cleaner look, and we've already set up our tools so we can update the blog with more relevant and "real" writing opportunities. Our posts will be carefully handpicked from thousands of sources.

Support us by donating any amount. Your donations will go to utilities, manhours and other resources involved in the updating of this blog. They will be well spent, we promise. A one-time donation of $5 will be immensely appreciated, but we are also accepting pledges of monthly/ be-monthly/ quarterly support as we are thinking of taking out the unsightly advertisements in the future. Just email us at writersafrika@gmail.com.

This is the only blog of its kind that's regularly updated, and we're sure you and the writing community in general have benefited from this labor of love.

We'll start updating this blog shortly. Let us also know of any requests and suggestions that you may have. In the meantime, do not hesitate to click on our donate link below. Thank you very much for your generosity. We're excited to get started again.

(IMPORTANT: You can still donate even if you don't have a Paypal account. Click on the donate button. Somewhere at the bottom of our donations page you can see "don't have a PayPal account" link. Further instructions are there.)

  • Job Opening: Writer for Cognician (South Africa)

Looking for young, aspirant writers to adapt books, blog posts and other material into content for the system.

    Does this sound like you?

You're a voracious reader. You love reading books, blog posts, web sites, magazines. If you could get paid for reading, you'd be the happiest person in the world. People would probably describe you as a listener, rather than a talker. Your friends like to talk to you because you listen and you ask questions that help them to come to terms with the challenges in their lives. You're also a good writer.

If you were working for us, here is how you might describe what you did last week.

    Monday

    • Began reading a 128-page book about Sun Tzu's Art of War (to adapt later in the week).
    • Researched how to write a LinkedIn recommendation by finding blog posts on this subject.
    • Identified the 15 to 20 key ideas common among all these blog posts, and organised them into clusters.
    • Adapted the key ideas into thought-provoking questions which can help people to write a LinkedIn recommendation for a colleague.
    • Wrote examples to demonstrate best practices for writing a LinkedIn recommendation.
    • Wrote a description of my LinkedIn recommendation process, describing the benefits to the user.

    Tuesday

    • Corrected my work from Monday, based on feedback from team leaders.
    • Continued reading the book on Sun Tzu's Art of War.
    • Researched brainstorming techniques by finding websites, blog posts and research papers on the subject.
    • Identified the 15 to 20 key ideas common among all these sources, and organised them into clusters.
    • Adapted the key ideas into thought-provoking questions which can help people to brainstorm more effectively.
    • Wrote examples to demonstrate great responses to my thought-provoking brainstorming questions.
    • Wrote a description of my brainstorming process, describing the benefits to the user.

    Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

    • Corrected my work from Tuesday, based on feedback from team leaders.
    • Completed the book on Sun Tzu's Art of War.
    • Identified ±60 key ideas from this book and organised them into clusters.
    • Adapted the key ideas into thought-provoking questions which can help people to apply Sun Tzu's ideas to their own work challenges, personal relationships, goals, etc.
    • Wrote a description of my adaptation of the book, describing the benefits to the user.

Here are some other things you might do in a week

    • Write the content for a presentation and brochure on some of the other work you've done.
    • Propose new ideas for content that could be developed.
    • Write introductory emails to new publishers or authors whose work we might want to adapt.
    • Follow up with users who are using our content.
    • Comment on blogs whose content is relevant to our platform.
    • Comment on our Facebook page.
    • Tweet ideas that are relevant to our customers.
    • Write a blog post for our blog.
    • Join meetings with clients to get involved in assessing their content development needs.
    • Interview individuals to capture their expertise, which can then become the basis of new content.

Experience is not as important to us as having the right attitude. You're a lifelong learner with an open mind and a commitment to self-improvement. You're a glass-half-full type of person. You're excited by new and unfamiliar things. Most of all you like to ask questions.

If this job sounds like something you'd love to do every day, we want to hear from you.

  • Call For Contributions/ Writers: Women And The Political Process In Africa

Make Every Woman Count is looking for writers to contribute to a 3-month series on women and political participation in Africa. Comprising more than 50% of the world’s population, women continue to be under-represented as voters, political leaders and elected officials. There is reason to be optimistic though. Africa, more than any other region, has made significant progress on increasing women’s political participation.

The proportion of seats held by women in single or lower houses of national parliaments has risen in Northern Africa from 3% in 2000 to 12% in 2011. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the proportion of seats went from 13% in 2000 to 20% in 2011.

What do you think about these numbers? Do they matter? What do you think needs to be done to increase them? Have they translated into improvements in the quality of life for women in Africa? If yes, how? If no, why? The National Democratic Institute claims that more women in politics at all levels contributes to honest government, peace, and positive developments in education, infrastructure and health standards, is this the case? Tell us your thoughts.

  • A handful of posts today + some fundraising ideas for the blog (please read and share)

We expect that you have a handful of writings to make as we've completed posting the announcements lurking in our search alerts from December 2011 to January 2012. Unfortunately, there were a few good ones that we missed out on; their deadlines have already passed. But there are other great opportunities that you can check out from today's updates.

So, it's zero backlog for Writers Afrika, officially! Now we can focus on new announcements which we will post as they come.

By the way, for those who are having a hard time reading white font -we're sorry. We will still be using the new template for a few more weeks/ months. But all your comments/ suggestions on the blog design are being noted.

And thank you to those who already donated for the blog. We can't thank you enough. There were only a few who heeded the call but we're not losing hope that we can continue this free service to African writers.

Which brings us to a few fundraising ideas - e.g., a custom blog design for a $50 donation or "have a virtual writing assistant for $10". We know writers do not earn much from their works, so we guess doing something (aside from regularly updating this blog) in return for a donation might work.

We're also thinking of freeing up the middle bar for event/ book advertisements for as low as $15 - $30 a month. Shoot us an e-mail at writersafrika@gmail.com if you're interested. The first one gets the top spot (above the fold) for our thousands of followers to see. We'll post the announcement soon.

That's it for today. Good luck with your writing!

  • Final blog design, payday, and call for donations - please read

Shameless reminder: it's almost payday and we still need your support. Please do not hesitate to donate any amount - it will be greatly appreciated. If our thousands of followers could donate even $1, then our blogs would be able to survive for years.

By the way, this is the final blog template, unless you have suggestions to make your visit more enjoyable. It took us weeks to finalize the colors, the header graphics, and the footer layout. We hope you appreciate our effort to provide you a more appealing design aside from the regular blog updates. Yes, no weekend off for us.

And speaking of blog updates, there are hundreds of announcements that we have not posted yet and we'll do so in the coming days. We also hope to start sending you deadline alerts via Facebook and Twitter within the week.

Start the week right - give a little love :) This is an initiative worth supporting.

  • Deadline May 21 | Free to Enter - Mini Operas Scriptwriting Competition (Judge: Neil Gaiman): ENO's Worldwide Search for New Creative Talent

    Deadline: 21 May 2012

Welcome to Mini Operas, ENO’s global search for new creative talent. We’re after the most creative, innovative and interesting writers, music makers and film makers out there, whatever your level of experience or knowledge.

    THE SCRIPT COMPETITION

Writing for opera doesn’t have to be scary. That’s why we’re swinging the Coliseum doors open and handing the chief job over to you – yes, you!

To ignite your imagination we’ve enticed three of the most inspiring writers to provide Mini Operas’ seed stories: Will Self, A.L. Kennedy and Neil Gaiman.

Neil Gaiman’s Story- The Sweeper of Dreams

    A.L. Kennedy’s Story – On Paper

Will Self’s Story – The Death of a Government Inspector

Here’s what we want you to do. Read the three seed stories and pick the one that interests you most. Then write a script for a 5-7 minute opera based on that story. When it comes to inspiration, anything goes: a single word, title, a mood or even a character name.

In May we’ll pick 10 scripts to go through to the next round. Those scripts will become the seeds that we will ask people to compose a soundtrack for in the next competition. Remember that your writing will be set to music by someone else and that words can take a lot longer to sing than to read, so less is definitely more.

At the end of the Mini Operas competition we’ll choose three lucky people to participate in a new mentoring scheme with Jeremy Sams, Nico Muhly or Leo Warner.

But for now, just get writing. You’ve got until 21 May to write your own script and enter it via our online form.

If you’re stuck on how to approach them, don’t panic. Our resident author Tamsin Collison has written us an example for each story. You might choose to do something completely different – it’s up to you. We’ll be adding more expert help to the site so come back soon for further inspiration.

    WHAT IS MINI OPERAS?

Mini Operas is a three-part competition from ENO that aims to find new creative talent for opera. We’re out to find creative and innovative writers, composers and filmmakers.

    WHO CAN ENTER?

Absolutely everyone. As long as you have a story to tell – whether that’s in words, music or pictures – we want to hear from you, whatever your age, whatever previous experience you have and wherever you live in the world.

You can enter as an individual or as a group; we just ask that you seek a parent or guardian’s permission to sign up if you’re under 16.

BUT I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT OPERA. WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?

Part of our aim in creating Mini Operas is to question and perhaps even redefine what “opera” can be. That’s why we’re not putting any restrictions on what you create and send in to us. We’ll be posting examples of how you could approach each competition along with lots of expert advice, but anything goes. So as long as your piece is your own original work created specifically for Mini Operas and hasn’t already been published elsewhere, we want to see and/or hear it.

    WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Like we said, we want to identify new creative talent and shine a light on it wherever it might be. People around the world will see your work including our judges and mentors, who include visionaries such as Terry Gilliam, Nico Muhly, Jeremy Sams and many others.

    IS THERE A PRIZE?

In addition to being a major platform to getting your work seen, at the end of Mini Operas we will select three entrants who we think have special talent and could benefit with close personal help from some of the industry’s best people. Jeremy Sams, Nico Muhly and Leo Warner have each kindly agreed to mentor one of our three winners for an academic year. You’ll get to discuss and develop your work with one of the most exciting people in your field.

OK, ALL CLEAR SO FAR, BUT HOW WILL THE WHOLE THING WORK?

Here’s Mini Operas in a nutshell:

We have three excellent writers who’ve each kindly given us a story that will serve as the seeds for the whole run of Mini Operas. We want you to read their stories and choose one you want to base your own script on. Then write a script for a 5-7 minute opera and enter it into the competition.

We’ll choose 10 winners whose scripts will go through to the composing competition, where we’ll ask all you music-makers out there to write and record a soundtrack for the script of your choice. What you compose is up to you – it might be anything from a piece for orchestra to the sound of traffic outside your window, or anywhere in between. Just make sure it’s your best effort at setting the words to music as you think best fit.

Round three works the same way: 10 winning soundtracks will go through and then we’ll ask filmmakers to visualise the soundtrack and script in some way. Again, it might be live action, animation or something else – it’s up to you.

We’ll come out the other end with 10 film winners.

CAN I SUBMIT MY PIECE IN A LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH?

No. All work must be in English.

WHEN EXACTLY DOES MINI OPERAS OPEN AND CLOSE?

Mini Operas is made up of three linked competitions so there are six dates to keep in mind:

The scriptwriting competition comes first. It opens on 26 March 2012 and closes to entries on 21 May 2012. Soundtracks are next – that competition opens on 4 June 2012 and closes 23 July 2012. Finally, the filmmaking competition is open from 6 August 2012 to 24 September 2012.

WHEN WILL THE WINNERS BE ANNOUNCED?

Our scriptwriting winners will be announced here on 4 June 2012. Winners in the music making competition will be revealed on 6 August 2012. And the lucky 10 filmmakers who make it through will be named on 8 October 2012. Winners of our mentorships will be announced in October 2012 (date tbc).

IS THERE A WORD LIMIT FOR THE SCRIPT WRITING COMPETITION?

No. We want you to write a script for a short opera around 5-7 minutes in length. Now that’s slightly difficult to quantify, but if you have a look at the examples we’ve made, you’ll get an idea of what we’re looking for. Bear in mind that they’re only examples and you might choose to write something much shorter. Be sure to give the composer who comes after you enough to work with but generally speaking, less usually really is a bit more.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW MANY PIECES I CAN ENTER?

No, you can enter as many scripts, soundtracks or films as you like.

I’M FINISHED! HOW DO I SUBMIT MY ENTRY?

For the scriptwriting competition, we want you to post your finished script to your blog and then come back to the Mini Operas website to tell us who you are and where we can find your script. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a blog already – they’re easy and free to set up. You can use any blog you like, but www.wordpress.com, www.blogger.com and www.tumblr.com are ones we particularly like.

  • Free to Enter - Mini Operas Scriptwriting Competition (Judge: Neil Gaiman): ENO's Worldwide Search for New Creative Talent
